Public Land Mountain Success (buck and doe down)
Well my season has been pretty slow, even by public land standards. The coyote population is outrageous, hunter pressure is high from bowhunters and turkey hunters, and our season is down to the last week. But the last few days have been great. On Nov 10 around 7:15 I stuck a doe out of a stand I call Mountain Top Ambush. She was quartering away at about 28 yds. I used a 2 blade hypodermic and took out both lungs. She ran 50 yds and went down.
I got her out of there relatively quick and got home to prepare for the next days hunt. I hunted a stand about 1/3 mile away that always has good rut movement and is a great funnel. Almost first thing in the morning I could hear a turkey hunter hammering his call repeatedly. He sounded close but I couldn't see him anywhere. Now where I hunt turkey hunters are required to wear a blaze orange hat and vest. I should've been able to see this guy but I couldn't. About an hour later I spotted movement in front of me about 150 yds. Through my bino's I could see it was the turkey hunter wearing all camo. He ends up working his way right by my stand (what a great funnel right?) without spotting me in the tree. He moves out past me and I decide I need to get out of there. I chose to go back to Mtn Top Ambush and it was a great decision.
This stand is a nice funnel to the top of the mountain and I've been getting tons of buck movement (mostly after dark) but I knew that would change soon. It was around 4:15 when i heard movement coming from up top. I turned to look and I saw a good buck coming down. After looking him over with my bino's I recognized him as a buck I saw last week on Nov 4 trailing a doe. He came in and I had a tough time stopping him but eventually I did and I stuck him good. The shot was broadside at about 30 yds. He mule kicked and took off down the mountain like a bat out of he11. I lost sight of him but heard that lovely crash into the brush followed by silence. He ran about 100 yds even with both lungs punctured by a 2 blade hypodermic.

I just killed 2 mountain whitetails on back to back days within 5 yards of each other on public land. What are the chances of that?

Nice buck! Curious as to what made that area a good funnel. Our rut will be coming up soon
