Re: Illegal stands on public land.
I used to hunt a public parcel during the late season in NE IL. The walk back to my spot was over a mile. It was a pain to get there and worse to get out after dark. Ive left my stand hanging there overnight on a few occasions just to save time (theres a checkout time limit) knowing that I was coming back to hunt it the next day (pre-Beast methods). Safety and keeping my hunting permission were more important than removing a stand in those circumstances.

Re: Illegal stands on public land.
I hunt a smaller section of public land which gets a fair amount of pressure during the season. I have some favorite spots that I like to sit on certain days, so a few days ago I decided to check out the area and see if there was any fresh late season sign. However when I went out there I noticed that someone left their climbing sticks and few screw in pegs on the tree. I was thinking about reporting the stand and the illegal foot pegs, but it just so happens that the tree that this person has their gear in is the same tree I sit in. Does anyone have any suggestions on if I should just leave it? or take it down? or call it in? the last thing that I want is to sitting up in the tree and have someone claim that I disrupted their hunt, because their stand is gone....

Re: Illegal stands on public land.
I would not tamper with other's property. I would notify DNR with a picture and gps coords and ask them what you should do about it. It is not a waste of the DNR's time. The last one I turned in, they asked me to let them know about every one of them I see.
They don't always have time to take the stand down, however they rely on people to be their eyes in the field. My actual conversation with the DNR from over a year ago: (I don't report all stands just the ones that are blatant disregard of game laws)

Hi I am reporting a tree stand that has been left out in the
XXX Marsh, South of XXX, WI, nearest to county rd "XXX". The tree stand
does not have any identification visible on it and is sitting on state
land. It is located at the gps coordinates below:
Thank you for contacting us with this information. We will pass this information on to the local Warden to investigate. What is the best phone number and time to reach you? The Conservation Warden may have additional questions while conducting their investigation. Your identity will remain confidential. It may be a few days before the Warden is able to make it out there, but I just wanted to assure you that he will look into it.
Thanks so much. I saw that the stand was still hanging in the tree last night when i scouted the area and I know it has been there at least since early october last fall, so at least 8 months.
I run into tree stands all the time on state land, should I be reporting more of these? I know the warden has many many duties and a huge area to cover. Maybe just report the ones that I know have been up for over a year?
Feel free to contact us with any and all stands that are permanently set up on state land. GPS coordinates and detailed location information help the Warden quickly locate the stands and remove them. If it were not for the information that we receive from the public, many of these things would probably go unnoticed.

Reported one I found Friday. Warden thanked me and said he's going to get it on Monday.

Re: Illegal stands on public land.
Nice work dewey. I should report more of them, it really does not take much effort. I found one today, it was wooden, screwed together with drywall screws It was only about 10 ft over the fence though. I decided to leave it. Hopefully nobody gets hurt on it. I am almost talking myself into reporting it as I type this.

Re: Illegal stands on public land.
People build permanent stands out here on crown land (public). It's not unusual to find them. You'd need a pick up truck full of hammers and chainsaws to take those out. Funny thing is most of the time, they're built in really bad locations with a buffet of salt licks and bait piles. There are tracks around them, but nothing like I've seen in baited areas that are much more modest in nature. Hunting downwind of those spots 3-5 hundred yards on one of the deer trails seems like a good strategy.

Rutnstrut wrote:seeds wrote:Guys hang some of those stands "way back". They wouldn't hunt way back there nearly as often if they had to carry those stands in and out every hunt.
They pressure areas that wouldn't otherwise get pressured if they'd bee obeying the law.
I've heard the story enough times: See a guy at an access and he's heading off into the woods carrying just his bow. Talk for a minute and he's quick to claim he climbs "freestyle" - just climbs up "like a monkey" and sits on a tree branch....And I'm lugging my sticks and stand.
But lo-and-behold,when I get back there, there he is sitting in an illegal,"seasonally-permanent" stand.
I get back there all sweated up and still have to set my stand - IF I still intend on hunting where this VIOLATOR has been taking an illegal advantage over law abiding hunters. Several times this year I've aborted a hunt in disgust because someone has been able to hustle back there ahead of me even though I got to the parking area first and unloaded when under the impression that no-one else was back there.
It is taking an unfair advantage over law abiding hunters. Any buck taken using an illegal advantage over other hunters has a taint to it.
I agree with you 100%, but there are quite a few commenting on this thread that must do it as they justify it or even belittle those that report the violators.
Agree completely with you both
