Too thick for tree stand

Unread postby Wisteveguy » Fri Oct 17, 2014 7:26 am

Hi I'm new to the beast, and I have a question. I hunt a big piece of public land and it is mostly poplar slashing, really really thick visibility is about 20 yards in most places, my question is because I have a treestand hung and I have a really mature buck bedding about 100 yards away, but I cannot shoot far and don't wanna mess my chance up of killing him this year, would most of u prefer a pop up blind or still hunting something like this ?

What ever method gives you the best chance. I don't like a pop up in a new area. I would go with a natural ground blind instead.
You can fool some of the bucks, all of the time, and fool all of the bucks, some of the time, however you certainly can't fool all of the bucks, all of the time.

x2 I have never had a lot of luck with a ground blind unless it is brushed in really well. Even then the deer just seem a little spooked by it.

Yea I was thinking stalking in as far as I feel comfortable then maybe sit behind some brush and wait for him to come to me, this buck is so unpredictable tho, I will try to post a pic of him and maybe get your opinions on size too?

These are some pics from about a week ago, I guessed him too be around 140", but I'm not that good at judging size, and around 4.5 years old ??

I would move closer and stick with the treestand.

X2
Being thick like that, you may not need to be very high. Play the wind more than anything, get as close as you think you can without tipping your hand.

Good luck with him. He looks mature to me as well.

I can't really get any closer, because the trees won't hold a treestand with my weight on it, right now I'm pretty far away and my tree is about 5 inches around, I'm about 12 feet off ground I would guess. I'm afraid that if I don't start squeezing him that when rut rolls around, he will disappear, it's a really big piece of woods that is super thick, there are other good bucks that I have seen but want this particular buck. I'm stumped lol

You say he's 100 yards away, in that thick stuff you can get in within 40 and you can find a tree.

Its hard to say what to do. I've done a lot of hunting from the ground and I'm not trying to convince you either way, but if you go at him on the ground and are pretty sure you know the trail he'll be on, let him get past you and shoot him quartering away hard. Trying to draw when he's coming at you and shooting him strait broadside is tough. Pop ups are great for does and younger bucks but killing a big one out of a brand new pop up set would probably take perfection x2 if you're close to his bedroom IMO.
