GPS/Hunting app for smart phone - which is best??

Unread postby fauxfly » Mon Oct 06, 2014 4:30 am

So we decided to finally upgrade the cell phones to "smart" . Lots of hunting apps out there. Just wondering what you guys use to log your route into the woods, mark points on a map, and be able to read elevation.. Does this animal exist in a free app anywhere??

If not - what do you guys use on your phones??

I thought I'd ask here first...always get great answers - I'd kind of like to do something like Bowhunter15's vid on marking a route, and then mark up the waypoints on a map per GPS coords and start to make my "bedding map" on my different public pieces. (I realize he was using a separate handheld gps unit - wondering if it can be done with a phone though)

Thanks guys!

I also use Trimble Apps. You can find them on the web at gpshuntfish.com. I pay the subscription fee for the elite membership. It cost me $30 with a free 14 day trial. This allows me to use the applications with all my devices (laptop, IPad, and phone). If you don't want the elite membership they do have options that are free.

OnXmaps is expensive, but works great. It includes public and private land boundaries along with landowner info (name for private, type of public, etc.). You can get for a phone or GPS. I met one guy who drives around for work and has it on his phone, said he is always looking into any promising looking piece he encounters during his travels. He also has shot a lot of big bucks.

I don't have unlimited time for running apps, so I'd rather have a hand held gps. I also don't want to drop my only means of communication in the water or on something hard and break it, so also another reason for the hand held gps. not trying to high jack the thread. just sharing thoughts is all.

I agree. Smartphone apps are nice but don't come close to the convenience of a hand held gps.

I've been using the paid version of MyTrails and BackCountry Navigator for Android. I think they were $10-15 a piece. They're both good and have offline maps and dozens of topo and imagery map sources included. I use Navionics for Android when I'm on the water.

Definitely try MyTrails. I think the free version is good for a lot of people and MyTrails Pro is only $2.50

I use Scoutlook and love it. I'm not familiar with Trimble at all but it sounds like something I might wanna look into. Is anyone familiar with both Scoutlook and Trimble and able to give a comparison?

I've been messing around with the new Hunt Stand Lite app and it's got a lot of great features. Trimble is also a great app as well.
