Re: 1st time public land hunter and a simple question
Can you glass it from a distance or maybe even from the water?

I'd second that, or even an observation stand. If you are going to go in, the afternoon is the best time.

Trust me: Someone else will likely scout it in the coming weeks. Probably several if access isn't too difficult.
You don't need to stomp thru bedding areas to look for old rubs, fresh tracks and evidence of how much hunting pressure it receives.

I hear you on that one, I'm going to dibble a little in public land too for the first time. Good luck this weekend.

I like the access by water idea as well.
I Took about 10 years off from hunting public land . Small properties that I hunt close to home are convenient but I'm bored with them . I also want my 10 year old son to learn how to read deer sign , learn why deer use certain terrain features to travel . Not just jump in the same old spots and wait for the deer.

I say glass it first, then walk it if you don't like what you see.

Re: 1st time public land hunter and a simple question
If you are not very experienced i think its better to go walk it. the knowledge gained is worth it. I know when i first started learning i was hesitant to intrude since it was close to season but if i had to do over i think the experience is more important than the result. So now my approach is to go see until i am experienced enough to know that my aerial scouting is productive

The top one I do not think is a bed... There is too much debris in it. It looks to me like standing water was once there and that kept the vegetation out.
THE SECOND ONE LOOKS LIKE BEds, but in high grass it don't look to promising to me. There is evidence of some nice bucks by the looks of that last pic. Keep looking.
