Was the tracker pushing the buck, or was it still moving on it's own routine when the stander shot?
A buck will see you three times, and hear you twice, but he's only gonna smell you once.

Great stories don't always end up with us tagging the animal and I always enjoy reading about the ones that got away as well. In this case nice to get confirmation of the buck you were tracking even though another hunter tagged him.
