Satelite map scouting

Unread postby Back in the Pines » Tue Mar 11, 2014 8:41 am

So I have been scanning through satelite maps at work of some public hunting land near my home here in Southern Michigan. I am really just confused at what I am trying to find when it comes to features on a satelite map or topo map.

Are there specific land marks or anything I should be looking for?

I am not used to doing a lot of public land hunting or scouting, for the past several years I have had 80 acres of private land between my father and I. This year though, the land owner I believe may be letting another group of guys (3-4) into the plot. We are trying to prevent that, but I am trying to be prepared in case I have to expand my hunting zone.

Any help is appreciated!

Welcome to the BEAST 8-)

We have a couple awesome DVD's in the BEAST store one on hunting Marsh bucks which really shows well what to look for in an aerial, and the other is "Hill country bucks" that shows how to look at a topo or hilly land.
They will teach you far more than I could teach you in print...

On topo's we are mainly looking for elevation and buck bedding... Bucks bed and hand out on the leeward hill sides at the top 3rd elevation and bed off points on the same side...

On aerials we look for transitions on dry land, and islands of brush and points on the edges of wet land.

Please don't think Im trying to just make a sale... I really don't make enough to care off the DVD's, But I do truly believe they are one of the best resources for the serious hunter looking to up his game against pressured whitetails.

Both the Hill country bucks and Marsh bucks DVD's are a steal at the price Dan sells them for. They cut years off the learning curve for hunting bucks.

Sounds like the support of the videos is pretty tremendous. I can't put in my credit card information at work, but once I am home.... :D

Can't wait. Everyone has lots of good things to say.

I have watched the dvds numerous times and I'm still picking up new ideas and learning new things each time I watch them. There is so much information in them that you have to watch them more than once. Absolutely the best hunting dvds ever IMHO.

Also as far as the online map scouting goes, I have found that I learn best by trial and error. I usually pick out two-four spots I think look the best and then I plan a route that allows me to check out the best looking spots first before even setting foot on the ground. When planning my route, I try to follow along transition areas since this is where the most sign is usually found.
