I think if you arrow a good one on public you have to focus on staying with that deer and or marking it so you know it's yours. I'd be willing to leave my stand out there and come back and get it later if I arrowed a monster on public.
When I shot mine last year on public I left my stand and sticks up. Picked it up the next morning while tracking. When I found mine I put a dollar bill in under the tongue, tagged it. Where it was there was no way it was going to be stolen without me catching them first. I think for the future I would carve my name in the hoof and film it obviously.
As far as them taking it and you not catching them…the only thing I can think of is hide it best you can or don't leave it alone or not under some sort of supervision.
