Late Season Public Hunting Tactics??

Unread postby slabbandit » Sat Dec 21, 2013 4:41 pm

I have plenty of Corp of Engineer and U.S. Forest Service land to hunt here but the problem I have is that this is not an agricultural area I live in. Hay for livestock is normally all that is grown on private and some COE land. How do I begin to pattern these deer when there is not a definite place or food source that they feed at?
It is illegal to bait on either lands also.

Walk and find them.
Tracks, droppings, trails.

Easy to pattern once you find them.

Happy hunting.... 8-)

Found that the deer have vacated all the early hunting places after dog running and gun season. Am finding tracks and droppings in the edge of the buckbrush which borders the big lake I live by. I guess I'll have to hunt a few pinch points I found with some fresh sign.
Also, the last few dogs I heard chasing deer during gun season were in this area. Kinda what made me go scout it today.

With dogs and gun pressure you need to think about where that pressure effects them the least. Might be the thickest stuff, or might be a spot to small to run dogs, or an over looked area... They are going to go where no one bothers them. As far as food, you gotta foot scout to know what they are browsing on.
