Re: Hunting public bucks next to santuaries
One of the best areas I hunt has a wildlife refuge area in it. These refuges in Wisconsin close to any entry Sept 1-Dec 10 and during Deer rifle season. The only way in to this section after the refuge closes is a dyke road that follows a ditch. This dyke start to go straight East and hooks North East gradually the closer you get to the refuge border. I found a big buck bed that was 300 yards from this refuge line. It was a mile back, but wasn't that bad to get to. It kind of baffled me why this was a preferred bedding area that was use year after year. I marked the location on my Garmin and went home. Later that night I checked that spot on my GPS and zoomed out. I found that bed was directly East of that dyke road and what ever buck that was bedding in that spot could smell everyone that walked in that area with a West wind. Just an example of how a mature buck will use anything to their advantage to survive.

Oldrank, I believe you and I are hunting the same ground in Michigan. I could be wrong but ehd struck it severely a couple seasons ago. Do you need a permit to hunt?

Haven't for a few years, but if things remain the same as last season I may reconsider.

You from lapeer? I've been on any land that way, yet anyways, I've always hunted west of that. I've heard lapeer county carries some big deer. I've been looking around at other state land around and meaning to expand for more beds to fill my season with.

Re: Hunting public bucks next to santuaries
I've hunted the lapeer game lands a few times never much luck though I did find one area that looks to have potential but I've scouted a lot if it and only the one area look good to me most looked way to pressured for the available cover it held...I know of a couple people that have hunted around that refuge and say they see good bucks out there but they never leave the refuge during the daylight

Re: Hunting public bucks next to santuaries
For the situation oldrank describes I would expect some of the bigger deer to cross on to hunting side during the rut. Maybe on one of the corners is a rut funnel, maybe not. Try for more options.
