What's the first thing you do when you find a new place to hunt? What are the steps you take to get on the deer

I always start with an aerial and topo map.

Aerial
1. Outline the property lines
2. locate the life essentials FOOD - WATER - COVER (or potential)
3. Locate all transition lines (good aerials will also show inner timber transition details like cedar to hardwoods)
4. Locate inside and outside corners
5. Locate points and fingers
6. Locate Visible funnels such as fence rows or narrow strips of timber connecting two larger bodies of timber.
7. Look for isolated food sources such as a large oak in an open area (oaks hold their leaves well in to the fall when most aerials are taken....easy to spot)
8. Look for isolated pockets of cover or thickets.
9. Locate concentrations of evergreens as a potential winter or inclimate weather bedding area

Topo

1. Locate potential bedding 1/3 elevation off the sides of points
2. Locate Saddles
3. Locate Shelves
4. Locate Hubs
5. Locate potential creek crossings
6. Locate ditches, streams or ridge side draws for access through the property

Then if it is not too close to season....I inspect what I expect and confirm my maps. Any particular point of interest such as funnels or potential bedding I take the map GPS coordinates and go straight there. If everything you checked on your map checks out then I narrow it down to locations where ALL of the features are in closest proximity of one another. You will see deer.

Hope this helps... God Bless.
