I have used a bike primarily for hunting turkeys. I welded a gun rack on the back to hold my shotgun. I didn't like the concept of having my gun on the handle bars b/c you could be riding through the woods and the gun will catch trees and other stuff. Not to mention if you fall the gun will get scared.
Anyways, here's a pic

I have those same holders, got mine at Bass Pro Shop. I believe they are Kolpins but there are multiple brands, big box sporting goods store will have them.

do you like them? How secure and quiet are they when holding a bow?
I had the bike out once this year and had everything but the bow in my backpack

They work fine, hold the bow well.
I carry my bow in a pack and do not use them...

They hold the bow very secure, they'll work well if you pick em up from Zap

Wanted to bump this to the top...
anyone else using a bike on public land?
I like the idea and have a few spots where I think this could work for me! I want to come up with a way to attach my l/w and sticks to the bike rather than wear them on my back while I pedal. Anyone have any ideas?

Re: Mountain Bike for Hunting?
Just got back on from 30 mile scouting mission on my mountain bike. It is awesome getting into areas you normally can't get this time of the year by walking. One of the public marshes I hunt cannot be accessed anytime for scouting or hiking but you can use the gated access roads with a bike only. Kinda weird rules but I found more great spots to check out this fall and by bike they would be about 2 1/2 miles from the parking area. The great thing is nobody will walk that far and I never saw anybody use a bike during the season. I will carry my stand on my back with the Molle harness and my bow will go on the handlebars held by grippers like Zap has on his bike. If I get a deer my cart will attach to the back of my bike if needed and should save alot of dragging.

I have a bike that I made into a hunting rig. I had the bright idea of making a trailer to pull behind it, and after using it twice, I can tell you that the trailer idea sucks - haha. You need to be lance armstrong to pull that dang trailer through the woods.
The bike however is much faster and quieter than walking. It would work muuuch better if I had a better way of carrying my gear. You do have to make sure you stash the bike in a well hidden spot. I just left it kinda next to a pile of brush one time thinking the camo would keep it hidden well enough, and I had a couple does come through and spot it right away and spook..

That's bizarre that they are gated off to walking. I am hoping to come up with a mountain bike to use to cruise the old logging roads on plum creek land in the big woods maybe putting the stand on my back won't be so bad. I'd be interested to see how you connect that deer cart to your bike!
