The Beast has totally consumed me!!!!!!!!!

Unread postby PLB » Sat Jan 21, 2012 1:04 pm

I have totally fallen for this style of hunting hook, line, and sinker!! I'm at a crossroads in my hunting career! All I want to do is scout and figure out bucks on public land. I'm even considering canceling my rut hunt in Sw Wi and hunting that week up north! It just isn't the same feeling killing a nice buck on private vs. public. So tell me am I crazy???

I feel the same way! Wether it be public or private killing a deer that you have put basically your life and soul into is way more satisfying to me than any other deer.

The insanity has only begun my friend.....wait until your sitting in a tree post rut wishing the season was over so you could start working on next year. The rut is still an absolute blast and a great time to be in the stand. Unless you have enough beds figured out for an entire season, I wouldn't give up an awesome rut hunt. Statistically it is still your best chance.

Not crazy at all, just maturing as an outdoors-man. I have been shocked at how much I didn't know about big bucks. I have been lucky a few times, but realize now that I have been hunting my areas all wrong for years.

Your last sentence of your first post, you asked if you were crazy, I just think you are slightly. The allure of public land hunting vs private land hunting, I prefer private.

It's all exciting untill you finally get set up on the "one", you know the swamp buck you have been dreaming about for 3 years and have him all scouted, then find his carcass with the head chopped off. Then you remember real quick what drew you to private land.

With a name like Public Land Beast hunting on public land better be your specialty!

Seriously though I understand what you are saying and agree 100%.
It can be extremely challenging at times but the complete satisfaction you feel when you are succesful makes all of the hard work feel that much more special.

I will say this however... as much as I prefer to hunt private ground it was EXTREMELY gratifying to pop Dinkasaurus last fall for my first public land archery buck. Just was a little miffed at the ground shrinkage.

Your not crazy. Well, maybe a little. But it's a good crazy. ;)

I'm starting to be much more interested in private land. I'm not sure I physically have what it takes any more to hunt public mature bucks. I think it's much easier to hunt them on private. Especially farmland.
