I did a scout/ bow hunt today on public

Unread postby magicman54494 » Fri Dec 23, 2011 1:17 pm

We recieved a dusting of snow last night so I took advantage of it to get out and do some scouting with my hunting gear in tow. Wow, how sad what I found! I walked a loop of about 1 1/2 miles. 4 deer tracks! Yes I said 4! I sat near a buck bed and swung thru to see if he had been there afterward. No luck. The search continues........
I wish I had some snow to help me locate them!

Yeah I hear ya. We got just under 2" of snow last night and normally I would be excited but I can't hunt until Monday. Sounds like by then it will be melted away! This has been a tough late season so far for patterning deer. The ground has been just frozen enough that the deer are not leaving any tracks.

tough break guys, we just gotta keep tryin'

I went shining by some public tonight and the results were pretty sad...saw about 25 deer, a few were bucks, one started running when the light hit him and I couldn't tell what he was. Saw about 1/4 of the deer I saw shining in summer, never seen so many picked cornfields with no deer. Maybe they are pushed way back into the swamp, or feeding on oaks/cedars before they were coming out? Gonna have to go for a walk I think..

I have a piece of private that has deer on it. I'll be hunting it yet this year. I also know an area on public where the deer herd up and I know some of the buck bedding there so I'll be spooking around out there as well.

I have been saying I'm going to go down there for a late season hunt for a few years now. It seems like I'm always broke by January though. One of these days I will make good on it. I hunted Ohio private land once that was open to the public. One word. AWESOME! I passed on what would have been my biggest buck ever because I new there was one in the 180's that had been seen going through that spot. Later I seen a buck in the 160's that would have tempted me, but he was out of range. This was down around the Brown & Adams county line.

I did a little walk about yesterday and was surprised at the lack of activity from the deer.

I think that "no acorns" have already started to hit hard...
I feel bad for the deer this year - by the looks of it from my quick scouting trip (hit 3-small spots) - they are yarding up sooner than usual.
At least the weather has been reasonably mild so far, but I fear a tough winter kill this offseason.
