Merimac Preserve

Unread postby mike_mc » Sun Dec 11, 2011 12:00 pm

I found this by accident while googleing something else, thought I would post it here since it is a further drive than I would like. It is a 1800 acre piece they want you to work 16 hours to earn the right to hunt. Here is a map. http://www.riverlandconservancy.org/Trailmaps.pdf

My work has a property that is in conservancy and only Quad employees can hunt it. You have to work a minimumum of 4 hours to get a chance to hunt it. For every 4 hours of work you do prior to hunting season they put your name in a drawing... I chose to pass on it.

I have looked at hunting the Riverland Conservancy land near Merrimac. I am sure the hunting could be nice and there always seems to be big bucks taken around that area. To me, it wasn't worth it because you had to work 16 hours and then there was no guarantee that you would be allowed to hunt that season. They have a draw for the hunt. At least that was the way I understood it when I was in contact with the property manager, Deb Frosch. Plus it is almost a hour drive from my house so I would rather put my time and effort to land closer to my house. If you lived close by and were looking for a place to hunt with nice bucks in the area, than it might be worth checking out.

There is a lot of public land in this area. You don't need to work 16 hours to get in the drawing. You just need to be willing to go the extra mile (literally and figuratively).
