Deer weight

Unread postby Schultzy » Sat Oct 22, 2011 12:57 pm

Last night my sister In law shot what I figured was a 1.5 year old buck. 2 hours later after she hit It we went and tracked him and found him piled up 150 yards away. Seeing the deer lay there everyone of us said "wow he's got a big body and head for a 1.5 year old". His track was of good size too. He dressed out at 135lbs. Never have I saw a 1.5 year old buck weigh that much. Most I see are In that 110 to 115lb range. For you hunters that Indeed weigh your deer with a scale what do your 1.5 year old bucks dress out at? Possibly be a 2.5 year old? I have a hard time believing It but to me the weight says It could be. But then again It's probably a horse of a 1.5 year old body wise.

The last 1.5 year old buck I weighed was in the hill country of Texas. It tipped the scales at 56 lbs.

Several years ago I weighed one on a scale in SE Wisconsin at 119 lbs. dressed. Multiply by 1.26 to get approximate live weight and it went 150 lbs.

A 135 lb. deer would have a live weight of about 170 lbs. That would be a good sized 1.5 yo.

great post. Getting a scale is near the top of my list. I shot a deer last year in NE lower MI that went around 160 dressed, and the DNR biologist said it was a 2.5 yr old. I questioned it and she said it was unmistakable with a 2.5 yr old by the teeth.

they called this a 2.5 yr old, dont know if it is or isnt. But I am getting a scale.

I'd have a hard time believing that as well Lou.

Almost every 2 1/2 year old buck I shot was between 150-165 lbs dressed. They are fed pretty good around here so I think a 135 lb 1 1/2 year old would not be that uncommon. I shot a 3 1/2 year old in 2008 that dressed out at 215 lbs on my scale. Guess it depends on your location more than anything else.

I have actually weighed quite a few deer over the years. 135 dressed for 1.5 year old is on the money. I have seen 1.5 year old dress out at 155. A lot also depends on what month the buck was born. He could be 3 months older than some of the other yearling bucks. It also depends on what month the buck is killed. A buck in October is always heavier than the same buck in November. So 105-155 is what I have weighed 1.5s at.
You can fool some of the bucks, all of the time, and fool all of the bucks, some of the time, however you certainly can't fool all of the bucks, all of the time.

Near us we have mid fall weights of 90-115lbs for 1.5 year olds. This is a no ag area and big woods.

My old man won a deer weight contest (bucks and does) with a doe one year on his shift at work.....30 some deer if I remember right. That doe weighed 137. Just saying, in our area a lot of guys shoot deer that think they weigh more than what they really do. His doe wasn't a 1.5 year old.

I wouldn't be surprised if that buck is a 2.5 year old or a 2 year old bred on 2nd or 3rd estros cycle doe.

You have a pm.

Our yearlings in the non Ag areas usually go 90-105 lbs around this part of the state, but we get a few over 140 lbs. It's real easy to tell a yearling by their teeth. The last 2.5 I passed around here probably would have dressed about 150 lbs and the rack was almost identicle to the one in Uncle Lou's pic. I have seen quite a few yearlings that have grown unusually big bodies for their age. Sometimes you see yearlings with unusually large antlers because of genetics and I think it's the same with big bodies.
You cannot invade mainland America. There would be a rifle behind every blade of grass.

Back in the day I made my butcher guy ( i was very green and afraid to process my own) weigh my Bucks.
3 different years my yearling bucks weighed 124, 125 and 128 pounds field dressed.
The reason I remember the numbers is because I always thought that they were bigger and the butcher estimated every one before we weighed them (125 lbs) and he was always within 3 !!!

So to me a yearling buck is around 125 lbs. plus or minus a few. So a 135 lber wouldn't be out of the question by any stretch. 160 lbs is a heavy 2 year old around here but not out of the question. I always try to get mine weighed just so I know and don't spread BS.

(Same part of state as Schultzy )
