Curse of the Doe lifted!!
Though I have been bowhunting since I was 14, and bowhunting Beast style ever since Dan and the BBO started helping me out about a year later, I had yet to harvest a doe with archery equipment. Unsuccessful for 7 years. During that time I'd had many close calls, misses, and unsuccessful track jobs. It had become quite a "curse", even though I had no problem at all harvesting bucks.
After failing to find the doe that I hit last night, it appeared that the curse would continue indefinitely. Even my hunting buddies were starting to claim that I was bad luck since nobody had gotten a doe yet this year lol.
Tonight I went into a new 46 acre property that we got permission for by nocking on doors. I set up on a natural funnel area. Within a 50 yard radius I had thick pines and popples, a power line, peninsula of saplings heading out into lowland brush, and alder brush. Trails and even a few rubs by the tree I picked out. I knew it as a good spot, but had my doubts due to the wind. It as whipping! 20-30 mph gusting to 40. I was in a tree as big around as my waist and still being rocked all over the place.
6:13 I saw a small buck crossing the powerline about 55 yards out. 6:24 two bucks came in right behind me. Both small 6 pointers. The one was only 10 yards and we had a little staredown. I closed my eyes and mouth and stayed still till he gave up and walked into the pines.
6:31 I heard the unmistakable sound of a deer walking through the pines towards me. I figured it was the same buck still, but stood and turned just in case. About 15 yards out, I saw that bald head walk out from under a pine and drew back. I held off while she walked even closer, finally turning broadside at 8 yards. When she cleared another tree, I let the arrow fly, which was difficult. My hand was numb from cold and I couldn't feel the release. The shot hit her perfect. Entered the top of the near lung and exited on the far leg. I knew she was dead as soon as it hit. She had only gone about 50 yards before piling up in the pines. It was kind of ironic as just this morning I had exclaimed how I wished that for ONCE, I could get a chip shot on a doe, as seemingly every shot I've ever had has been awkward angle or small opening, etc. Tonight that wish came true.
The curse of the archery doe is lifted, prime venison is in the fridge, and my EAB tag is filled. What a night!
Sorry about the cell phone quality, but its all we had.
