I am a bit confused on this information that is on the wdnr site. My kid will begin bowhunting this year and I was under the impression that she NEEDED to have hunter safety certification to bowhunt. According to this it says she must. but down a ways it says it is voluntary and not required????? She is enrolled in a program now but I think it is not necessary. It is strictly geared towards firearms and she has no desire to hunt with a gun. She will not even target shoot a gun. Anyone know if this course is necessary to bowhunt???? This was taken directly off their site. Any person born on or after January 1, 1973, is required to be certified in either basic Hunter Education or Bow Hunter Education before purchasing any hunting license, including an archery license.
Wisconsin has adopted the National Bowhunter Education Foundation's (NBEF) International Bowhunter Education Program which is acknowledged and accepted worldwide. Although Wisconsin's bowhunter education program is voluntary and a bowhunter education certificate is not currently required in order to bowhunt in this state, numerous other states and certain federal properties do require a bowhunter education certificate from a course approved by NBEF in order to bowhunt.

To bowhunt, hunters safety is not required. It is also not required to gun hunt IF you are hunting under the mentor program.

Wow crazy loophole! Is the bowhunter education class required to bowhunt however? Or can someone simply pick up bowhunting with no training what so ever if they can come up with the $24 for a license?

Im an H.S. instructor, hopefully I can shed some light on it. To bowhunt you have to pass a basic hunter safety course, it is optional if you want to take the separate bowhunter safety course, which is different from the regular course and is just geared towards bowhunting. I am not sure how it works now with the mentor program, but for sure if your over 12 you need one or the other. I am thinking of starting up a bowhunter safety course, there are not very many around in WI.

That needs to be more clearcut in the regs. I have asked two different HS instructors AND a warden, they both said HS is NOT needed to bowhunt. Not doubting you, just repeating what I was told. The reason this is fresh in my mind id because my 12 year old just completed HS last week.

Their entire rule book needs to be simplified, any more you practically have to have a degree from the Ivy league to determine if I can shoot a deer or not, and for real good times, try to figure out what tag to use!!!
