Are your trail cameras a tool or toy?

Unread postby Stanley » Sat Aug 27, 2011 3:42 am

Just wondering if you use your cameras primarily for scouting or just for fun? I don't use my cameras at stand sites but more in other areas to see whats around. So mine are used exclusively as scouting tools to see where bucks are moving to and from. I have 7 cameras percolating as we speak. Won't check them until the middle of October. How do you use your cameras?

You can fool some of the bucks, all of the time, and fool all of the bucks, some of the time, however you certainly can't fool all of the bucks, all of the time.

Agreed, but why use them then?

Checking to see what is on a camera is as much fun (maybe more) as hunting for me.

I use them before season as a tool to check inventory on whats in the area. I have one out back for kicks n grins and more of a toy. I will take them with me out of state this year and set them on a pinch or scrape that I'm not hunting at the moment, just to see whats there in case my other area's are slow.

Tool for me, until I start taking inventory for turkey season...then it turns into more of a toy.

We are six hours away from where we hunt so they are used more as a tool. We do have some set up at our stand sites. A 180 and a 160 were killed at camera sites where our stands were hung. I think if you are checking your cameras regularly then you might not want one at a stand site, for us i dont believe it matters.

I know of someone that does the same thing in Ontario... cams at every stand site and they do just fine. It has more to do with checking frequency then it does the actual camera - I agree

I run them early for inventory and only check 1 maybe twice a month. As soon as season rolls in I use them in areas other than food to figure out which bucks are still around and where they are traveling.
Rut my cams go over scrapes to see which big boys are in the area still
By using trail cams I can honestly say its helped me NOT hunt deer that ive wanted to bc they are in the area or using similar access as me and I would blow them out in the dark. I def use them as a tool for inventory and when too and not too hunt.
I also like them as a toy bc it is really fun seeing whose hanging around. I think this also helps with buck fever bc you get to know these deer.

Both for me. I love to look at the pics and take inventory. I also know if I have and buck photos close to sunrise or sunset I am close to his bedding area. If I have done my scouting I should know where that area is and how to hunt it. It is also nice to be able to see the date and time so you can track the weather, wind, or moon phase to help you get on that deer.
