I have been on this quest the last couple of years to get lighter and lighter in my pack....essentials only. This is my average pack which is a Cabelas Outfitters Fanny Pack. If I am hunting all day I carry more. My goal was 10 items or less.
1. Nikon Rangefinder
2. Small roll of campers toilet paper
3. Outdoor Edge Swing Blade Knife (pair of rubber gloves)
4. Now Wicked Tree Gear Hand Saw (replacing my Gerber)
5. Petzl Headlamp
6. Dakota 20 GPS
7. Huntin Hoist retractable Pull ( belt style...these things are awesome)
8. (2) Cranford screw in tree steps (handy for a lot of things, but I usualy hang my pack and my bow from them will screw in to any tree with no effort)
9. G2 Hardwood Grunt Call
10. Rattle Bag
whats in your pack?

Re: whats in your pack?
I have not carried a pack with me in years... If it don't strap to my stand or fit in a pocket I don't bring it.
In my pockets you can find
a small flashlight
a camera
a knife
a bow rope
& some milkweed
Strapped to my stand you can find
a camera arm
my jacket or cover-alls

X2 clothes strapped to the stand, that's it. I go back to the truck if I kill and get my stuff.

Re: whats in your pack?
I rarely take a pack while deer hunting, but have one in the truck with many misc items. The exceptions seem to be when hunting with a youth or someone else, especially if sitting in a blind. Don't know why sitting in a blind requires more stuff than walking all day.
most important things are in my pockets. Knife, cell phone (used to leave that in the truck but had a buddy fall from a treestand and he called for help), tags, piece of string.

Re: whats in your pack?
As a rule, i take no pack.
As others have stated.....if it fits in my hunting coat pockets it gets a free ride.
Flashlight
Grunt tube
Gloves
Rangefinder
Phone
And the bow hanger....kind big but fits into the pocket. Just make sure while climbing or using the climber stand, that i dont tip over and it falls out.
If i am ground hunting with ghillie, i take less than this. Usually just the rangefinder around my neck.
The benefit for me is....i hunt close to home. I never take a gps. And its close enough that i can get help for deer recovery efforts if needed. The fellas in our family love a good blood trail tracking job anyways. Lol

Re: whats in your pack?
I always have my medium Alice pack whether hunting or scouting just can't leave home without it.
My pack doubles as a game bag when I kill & along with my pack a carry a Loc-on Limit stand & one LW stick. I normally wear my harness since it weight less than 1/2 lb.
In my pack
-knife
-thermacell & refills
-garbage bags - utility size (for waders & rain coat), regular size (line my bag if a kill)
-roll of TP
-headlamp & backup batteries
-grunt & dirty little doe calls
-gloves
-pull rope
-saw
-compass
-spare shooting glove
-phone
My total weight ready to hit the woods is around 18lbs & when returning to the truck successful around 50lbs.
