How old do you think this guy is?

Unread postby sticknstringarchery » Wed Jul 27, 2011 11:34 am

I have this buck that keeps showing up on my camera I set out last week. he is there within an hour every time. Pretty much every night between 11:45pm and 12:45am. I have alsofound his trail going back to his bed in the mornings but I have not put a camera out. I will moe one out there next week though. I'm going to go after him if you guys think he is a 3+ year old. I'm thinking he is but, I am also new to this kind of thing. The resilution isnt that great but, maybe some of you can tell. He would make for a really nice first bow kill.

I would say not 3 1/2...but I am no expert...his body makes me think he is younger. And YES he would make a great first bowkill...Personally I would not let the suspected age of a deer determine if I would shoot it or not if it was my first bowkill. That is a great looking buck. Good Luck if you decide to go after him...

I know its not. Not the greatest camera in the world. If he steps out in the first few weeks, its going to be hard not to send one through him. Should I let him go or take him? What would you guys do if it was your first bow harvest?

You have to be happy with what you shoot, not me.

What size bucks are available for a date with an arrow?

How many doe tags are available to you?
If you have not killed a deer with your bow, I would get some experiance by killin as many doe's as you can without hurtin the herd. Then maybe you will see some bigger bucks in the meantime.

I personally do not like to regret using my only local buck tag early, unless its something bigger than I have shot before.

As you have not killed one yet, it may be a good idea to set a realistic minimum before you hunt. If you like to spend time in the woods, its all good anyway, kill or not.

I don't even see bucks like that in the distance, let alone in range. Its all about location for the most part. Do your cousins hunt your land or somewhere else? Have you shot bucks like that with your gun?

You need to go where there are some big bucks, if you want to kill a big one.

3.5 maybe a big 2.5.... I think it will be close to P&Y. My 1st buck had buttons. My 1st bow kill was a 5 or 6 pointer. Shoot it if you don't screw it up with those cameras. ;)

Shoot what makes you happy. If it's your first take whatever you want. My first was a small 8 that got dwarfed by the buck in that pic. I can tell you it's a great feeling taking your first deer with a bow knowing you did all the work to get it within 30yrds or so and being able to draw on it and release an arrow. Walking up on it with your bow in your hand and holding the deer for the first time.

It's purity at it's finest.

Good luck
