Spysar wrote:Well, you guys are lucky. In NY there is no early season.

And would you take a trip out of state in Sept??? Instead of Nov???

I have hunted Iowa with some success the 1st week of October... Yes. I will hunt out of state outside the rut, BUT, scoring outside the rut takes knowing your area well and a little pre-scouting.
Most guys burn vacation for hunting, but won't for scouting...

New un-scouted areas? I go during the rut.

Knowing the main state that Spy and I hunt- my newest verison of the most common mistake is simply:

Hunting big bucks where they are not.Meant on a macro level and a regional level.

Here are my biggest mistakes...

1. Hunting without a plan. Even if it is the wrong plan, at least you put some thought into the hunt and I know that makes me more engaged when I am out there. I got caught this year not engaging the brain right away, had a buck came in chasing a doe that was one I would have loved to have killed and before I knew it they were both gone. Had I had my mind in the game, I would have had a much better chance to bag that deer

2. Not picking out trees during scouting. For me, it's great to find a bed. It's even better to have an outline of the hunt before I leave the area. Kind of like mistake number 1, it's easy to think the game is over once you find that bed, but there are a lot of variables that need to be considered. I am still learning all the variables and how to make better guesses as to how the hunt will go.

3. Not hunting enough. I know there is stuff on here about hunting smart, but I am relatively new to this, so some of this stuff I have to learn in the field. Even if it means screwing up, it never hurts to see it. And if you screw up and learn from it, well that is money in the bank in my book.

These are pretty general mistakes. If I listed all the little mistakes I commonly make, it would take a short book to cover all of those.

Making excuses. (I just have bad luck. You're just lucky)

Hunting in the same locations with the same nonchalant manner year after year and expecting better success.

Not using the wind to their advantage.

Not understanding how bucks use the wind to their advantage.

I fell into each of these categories for years.

Hunting the spot where you saw the buck for days. Not even thinking about where or which way he was headed.

I've made all of the mistakes listed and have beena eliminating them over the past few years.

As for the rut.....I love it, it is hard to beat a cold frosty morning in November in a tree stand. What I love about bed hunting early season is it puts me in the game for a good buck prior to the rut.

All the scouting I do for beds has also made me a much better rut hunter.

My biggest mistake is embracing everything I hear including the the things on this site.

Advise: Trust yourself and challenge the conventional. That is the edge. That is where you learn.

Good advice. I caught your tip about hunting the windward if the cover is much better.

Overlooked details, from scouting to prep and execution the more you plan the better your hunts will be. I've mention this before but I can always tell when I haven't done enough homework on a set, almost feel like I am going in blind to a hunt.
