Deer Camp

Unread postby ZanderBones » Tue Sep 13, 2022 6:17 pm

There is something always special about deer camp, everyones is different yet the same. Memories are made, moments are shared and deer are being hunted. I find it that any time that deer season comes around I'm always waiting for that one week.. Deer Camp ..and so i'm making this post to see who else goes out to Deer Camp.

What does your camp look like, where is it at, what does it mean to you?

My deer camp is the opening week rifle (Nov 15th).. Its on Public Land in the middle of the Huron National Forest (MI), we go out about two weeks in advance to cut firewood and get the camp site prepared. We hike 5 miles back in with all of our gear on our deer carts, its a foot travel only area. You have to work to get back in there and we usually find ourselves helping each other with each cart, but that's what makes it so enjoyable. The hard work with the family i'm surrounded with is what makes this trip and if we get a deer its that much more enjoyable. We stuff six or seven people in a TP tent and camp out for a week, wake up and hunt til night and possibly come back with a story. I love it and can't wait for it to be here again.

Just wanted to see how everyone else does deer camp from around the world.

This is a special subject for me, since I have had so many great camps. I was blessed, that we never once, had a arguement, in any of the camps. Everyone was hard core, and helped each other. First camp, 1976 to 1994,,, Bayfield County Wis, up in Delta. It was Nirvana,,,, no wolves, great forest mgt, no baiting, we did alot of tracking, and sitting, shot some great animals. We were all in our late 20s when we started that camp.........................

1994 to 2010,,,, old camp broke up, guys have careers and families and move, so I joined up, with friends in Clark County. same thing there, but by 2010, the wolves were everywhere, and it just was not what we wanted........................

2010 to 2013.... Trempeleau County, great hunting, but with what I call "tape porn" big buck madness, the neighbors were not nice, it was not the same. Some went further south, I went into the UP of MI, and found my little paradise...................

I did join up with a partner, we have a old Amish school house, on land in Vernon County, and that is our camp now. My MI place, is the hub, prior to gun season on the 15th, everyone stops by, and is by my fire pit, and talks hunting, and swaps stories,,,,, I go back down to Wis later on, and then its back and forth.............................

Been going up to my grandparents cabin since I was 15. Clark county Wisconsin. My grandpa (quit hunting before I started going), my dad, his 3 brothers, and 2 family friends. And myself. Certainly don't rough it, eat better than we should, and I'm the most serious hunter in the group.

Still look forward to it every year. First time I walk in I always take a couple minutes to look at the wall and 4 generations of my family and bucks from every one of us up there. Nothing quite like that. I have better hunting elsewhere but I've done really well up there by my standards. Got one on that wall (2016 kill zone actually), had another busted one stolen off the woodpile that probably would've ended up as a coat rack, and this one pictured that's since been added I think.

I do wish I lived closer but not sure if the opportunity arises I would want this place. Lots of memories just too far away to really enjoy it for what it is. True paradise during hunting season but outside of that just doesn't do anything for me.

Hope to carry the torch as I'm the only one in the 4th generation that hunts (only guy as well) and get a 5th generation to walk the same ground and drag one out of the river bottom. Fully plan on gun hunting here as long as I can, just might be out of a hotel or my camper that's over a hour away.

I've been in same camp for almost 30 years. Hunted with mostly same people for that length of time. Also attended a few funerals also. Probably got another one in near future. Our camp has been a camp since 1964.We have city water, sewer and electricity. Lot changes over years. Lot of good times also. Woods change every year. Timber companies come in cut and leave. We just keep rolling with changes. Don't have but one small picture.

I'm reason they call it hunting and not shooting.

Missed this one!

There isn’t to many things I miss more than the deer camp of my youth. Had thousands of acres of prime whitetail habitat for just me and my father for pretty much nothing. Was an old cabin on the place that we made camp. I learned how to build a fire, sharpen a knife, and clean a critter at this place.

For the first 5 years or so it was just me and my dad. But in the years to come it was uncles, brothers, grandparents etc… I had the time of my life. I had no clue what a big buck was and honestly didn’t care. I shot whatever made me happy.

Was a time many years later when I began to get serious about hunting big bucks that I would think back and say man I blew it. Cause the deer camp of my youth was about as close to non pressured, large acreage, prime area as one could get. Now that many seasons have passed my thinking has changed. I am truly blessed for those days. Wasn’t any expectations, restrictions, or goals. We hunted cause it was fun. I wouldn’t trade those memories for anything in the world and I really miss it.

My solo deer camp. Live by my own rules, some days it’s exactly what I need.

Plus full menu control. Tonight is fried taters and onions with venison brat Pattie’s and hot dogs on the griddle.
