Watch those stingy insects

Unread postby DaveT1963 » Mon Aug 29, 2022 7:29 am

Close call today. Was an hour away from home, 3/4 mile from truck, 10 foot up a tree when a swarm of yellow jackets or hornets (didn't have much time for proper introductions) nailed me.

I took over 20 stings to neck, face, ears, arms, chest and back.... at least that's the ones I can see. The pic is of left arm where I took 7 hits right by elbow/bicep.

No benadryl with me like I normally do. I tried to fight them off but eventually had to bail out of the tree, gather all my gear and walk/jog 30 mins to truck, and then a 50 min drive home.

Thankfully I had daughter to talk to me while I walked out and then 911 as I drove.

I got home, took a shower, popped 2 benadryl and now I'm waiting to see if I need to go to ER.

The pain is awful, feel like my entire left side is being stuck with a red hot pin. my ears and arms are throbbing with needle pricking pain....

I typically always have benadryl with me as I'm allergic to bees/wasps, but for some reason I didnt this time. I said a few prayers and I know God helped me get home.

Stupid, stupid, stupid. Next time I'll look even better for a yellow jacket/ hornet nest before I start climbing a tree.

Close call! Glad you made it back.

You have an epi-pen? If not, you need to get one. Buddy's kid would have issues if a fire ant stung him and we carried an epi-pen.

I carry Benadryl when I remember - dog fennel with swell me up at times.

Yellow Jackets tore me up this weekend too. So I - quite literally - feel your pain... Ran over a nest with the lawn mower and were having none of it... Took about 6 or 7 hits between both legs around the ankle. Fought them off, came inside and washed the wounds, took some acetaminophen to keep inflammation down, and put ice on them. Was in pain all day... Burning. Now, the next day they are super itchy and it's like torture to not scratch...

It's pretty amazing how a creature so small can put such a hurt on you... I hate those things...

I got some revenge though. Went out there with some foaming raid and shot it into the hole of their underground nest... Then took much enjoyment in watching many die.. I need to go back out there at some point and make sure the nest has been truly eradicated. Try to stir them up and see if any activity results... I still haven't cut that area of the lawn and I'm in no rush.

Horrible this had to happen especially when your allergic to stings. Hoping your recovery goes well without complications.

From what I can tell I took 26 stings today. By all rights I probably shouldnt have made it out of the woods this time. I am supposed to carry an epi-pen but never do, I do however "always" have benadryl on me for just such an occasion. Except today of course when I took more stings then I have in my whole life combined.

All I can say is..... But God.

Wow thanks to God you're alright. Good reminder for when I bring my 13 y.o. hunting. He gets some pretty bad reactions to stings and has an epi pen which we often forget to bring along whether to work when he comes or hunting.

Those epi pens are themselves - no fun. You ever see the needle on one of those bad boys? You almost want to take your chances with the stings.
