Hard altered buck already.

Unread postby Tennhunter3 » Sun Aug 21, 2022 12:09 am

This morning I went glassing..

I saw a very large Batchelor group of bucks about 120 yards away. I watched them for awhile and counted 9 bucks together which is the biggest Batchelor group I've ever seen.

The two biggest bucks a 13 point and a 10 point had part hard antler part velvet both very impressive.

Then the next age class 3 year olds was a 10 and two other 8s in velvet but they were small compared to the two biggest that were 4 plus.

One of the smaller bucks a two year old 8 I instantly noticed something off about the deer. And it clicked he had no velvet at all. He was hard antler. It's very odd, I've never seen one this time of year hard antlered in Tennessee. I wish I could've gotten a pic of him. He was the only one without velvet.

The rest of the bucks were small it was amazing to see so many together like that.

Anyone else seen a hard antlered bucks in August?

I watched a buck all last summer that had one hard antler and it turned black

Once late Sept came the velvet antler held velvet way too long. Odd how they do sometimes

I know last couple seasons locally during the velvet hunt a few hard, clean, and no red bucks were taken

This was earliest I ever seen here in AR. Usually they keep velvet til September 5th-6th, but this one last had shed and was CLEAN by the 18th of august.

Thats interesting and exciting to see that many together

Right about now is when I see them shedding out. I have jumped a P&Y about this time of season and he was fully hard horned.

Usually its the bigger ones I see shed first but I think its a mix of things like the timing of losing their antlers in the spring.

Speaking of , a crazy sighting I had was seeing bachelor group and a Booner holding both sides April 5th !

I saw a buck line of young bucks chasing a doe one morning.
As far as Batchelor groups most I see is 2-4. Seeing 9 was pretty crazy..

A booner that hasn't dropped in April would be a sight.

It has been very strange for me so far this season.

These two guys are running together:

These guys are running solo. I guess they aren’t allowed to play with the big guys.

Same with the does. All my pictures have been singles or one doe with her fawn.

This is the norm:

Very odd for me so far. I don’t know what to make of it.
