Hopefully one of them will stick around! They’re the biggest bucks I’ve found thus far.. I know where I’ll be sitting on opener, that’s for sure.

You don't want people thinking there are big bucks around, keeps the pressure off. Good luck putting a tag on him this season!

Wore out some boot leather today scouting some new public. This is the first year I have actually scouted during the summer. I've been using the opportunity to check out new places I've never been to before, mainly just learning the land and figuring out whether or not it's worth hunting. I scoped out which oaks had acorns this year, and got an idea of where the bedding areas are. I picked out a couple potential hunting spots also. It's not easy with the humidity and bugs but I feel like it's preparing me for those early season hunts.

Currently snooping around in Nebraska. Landed at one of my destinations a couple hours ago. Got an hours rest and out driving/glassing the area. Going to catch up on sleep tonight and hit the boots hard tomorrow.

Started my day pulling a fawn out of a barbed wire fence. Hiked about 8 miles in terrain where deer aren’t. Spent the last quarter of the day driving to some stuff that was dead. Couldn’t do an observation sit on my #1 choice because the wind was wrong. Ultimately, I found out where they are and where they are not. Alfalfa is the ticket right now and the creek/river bottoms are second. Decent amount of acorns but haven’t found any oaks that are raining. Not sure it would matter with the herds hammering alfalfa. Got some glassing/scouting to do in the morning and a plan for a sit in the evening. Bow in hand tomorrow.

Got creative with my scouting and busted out the kayak today. I found a state game area map scouting that has a big lake in the middle. It's more like a lily pad marsh to be honest, but most of it is navigable by kayak or canoe. I found a few areas that are only reachable via water access, unless someone was coming from bordering private land. Once I got up on land I scouted a little bit. The spot was timber, with ditches and some thick areas. There was some good looking rubs from years past. No hunter sign to be found. I picked out a couple trees that I can easily get up into right by the water, should be bullet proof on a west or south wind. There are some oaks scattered through out there, but I'm thinking maybe pre rut for this spot, there is a heavy trail that parallels the shore line which has all the rubs, and on a west or south wind (blowing towards the water) a buck could cruise that trail and scent check all the thick areas of timber, with the safety of the water on his downwind side. I'm just running scenarios through my head here, but it makes sense.

Finally got onto a good buck. Damn racoons kept climbing over my camera and moving it. Also got some scouting pressure there but at least I know a good one is in the area and I have a place to start.

Don’t know if you would call this scouting or just soul soothing time in a tree. My season is still weeks away. But I got off work at a decent hour and decided to try and see if I could get close to some deer. Actually my first time sitting in my beast stand for a couple hours. No complaints, works as advertised. I have the original seat and it might look like crap but it’s probably the most comfy cushion I’ve ever had.

I took my recurve just in case some hogs fed down the oak littered drainage. Seen a recipe for wild hog shoulder I’m anxious to try. No dice! But did see several deer and 3 bucks. No giants, but a unique 7pt who had some dried velvet hanging. Fun outing none the less. Come on October!

Camera bombed the heck out of some stuff I’m going all in on for the rut. Rolling the dice on one buck I’ve been trying to catch up to since ‘17. Found his ‘19 left side today. Roughly 100 yards from where I found his ‘20 left side back at the end of December.

I pulled a camera that I had on public just off the road, and I got a picture of a shooter 9 point back in July. Then I went shining last night and got eyes on what I'm pretty sure is the same buck in a field on the same chunk of public. I'm happy he is sticking around. The good news is I scouted this area pretty heavily back in the spring, so I have the best bedding areas mapped out, so I'll be looking to catch up with him in October. I also shined another shooter in a different area, but I'm not putting much stock into him because he was a ways away from public.

I'm ready to rock. I have all my gear in order, and the honey-do list around the house is almost complete. October can't get here quick enough!
