There is a lot of public land in that area. I have decided to go there with my 12-year-old for his first hunt this year.
I am not asking for GPS coordinates and NOT looking for big bucks. I'd just love for him to be able to get a shot, or even SEE a deer.
Can locals tell me if there are any standouts in the public hunting lands of Crawford & Grant counties?

Re: SW WI Hunting
I mostly hunt Iowa county but I believe the habitat and deer densities are similar all over south western WI. Id pick a spot with out anyone in the parking lot and walk until you find some sign or it starts feeling deery. I don't really think you can go wrong.

Thanks. Last year Black River was a bust. I used to shoot deer there easily 20 years ago. Locals say there are 3 wolf packs active and it really hurts.
Also, I didn't make opening weekend.
I don't know this area and we get in the night before, but, I'll look at everything I can find online...
