Up and Comer

Unread postby Boogieman1 » Sun Aug 29, 2021 8:45 am

This lil guy was sure fun to watch last season. It’s a 1.5 year old with his first set of antlers. Sucker doesn’t weigh 75lbs. Around bucks of his own age class he certainly thinks he’s the man. I hunted that particular spot guessing 20 times this past rut. Would say I saw him 15 out of the 20. Sometimes multiple times throughout the day. Suspect I will see quite a bit of him this year and i’m excited to see how he has developed. For such a young buck he has a impressive set of antlers (for my parts) Hoping he slips through the cracks and gets some age on him. He’s a homebody and suspect he always will be.

Is it a spot you could throw up a camera now to see if he made it?

Yes. Ran a camera the entire season maybe 75 yards down from my stand. I got 2 pics of him after our season ended. Kinda crazy scenario I can’t explain. That property is private but it’s 5 acres. I have had permission for 15 years. Never killed a single deer. Im basically hunting the corner of 2 brushy fence rows that dump into a wooded creek bottom with winter wheat fields in the opposite direction. I’ve always ran cameras there, but never got good results. Maybe once a season I would get a buck running full speed through and a couple doe shots. But for whatever reason it was the spot to be last year. I got pics of 6 diff bucks in daylight that was over 6 years old. Laid eyes on 5 of em from the tree. Shaved one’s armpit, elected to pass one due to busting up his rack, and had some of the others in range but no shot. Bit of a long shot, but if it’s a player again this year I will be sitting pretty. Spent a load of early summer hours there working. All I can say is if one comes through this year he will be broadside @15 yards! My kinda odds

That’s a good looking buck.

I hope he makes it long enough to reach a good amount of his potential.
Around here the bucks with the best potential are the least likely to make it to maturity.
Most are killed at 2.5-3.5.
I would guess most places are like that.

Mighty white of ya! That’s the one I shaved the armpit. Never got a daylight pic of him but was the most routine under darkness. After seeing 9 different bucks run under my tree b4 9:30 am. I messaged a fellow beast and good dude that it’s bout to go down. Sure enough that sucker was the next one through. No excuse, I simply screwed the pooch.

I also liked that 3rd one from the top. By the time he came through he looked like this…. I elected to pass

Yes sir! Those good genetic 2.5 year olds are a death sentence. Have a 2.5 month rifle season here which eats up most of the good stuff. Being mostly farm country a lot of the locals idea of hunting is taking pot shots out there kitchen window.
