Huge blunder?

Unread postby CL driver » Fri Aug 27, 2021 3:19 am

The other day I went in to fix a camera that quit transmitting and I was walking in a drainage of a soybean field that has an old stone pile with brush/grass about the size of a two car garage, well, like an idiot I’m just walking fast not even paying attention and I jumped a nice buck, not much wind so don’t know if he smelled me but he saw me for sure! Looked at me for few seconds and tore out!
I never in a million years would have guessed that’s where he was bedding, I was getting him on camera almost 1/2mile from there and thought for sure I knew where he laid
Did I spook him for good? I swapped cameras and haven’t seen him since that day.

He’ll be back. If you were getting him consistently on camera before then there’s a reason he likes it there, and he’ll be back. I wouldn’t worry about it to much.

Stay away from it for 2 to 3 weeks and then slip back in and hang the camera, if it will be hunting season at that time. Bring your gear and hunt it.

He may come back or he might not use it again till next year.

Doesn’t sound like a blunder sounds like you just gained some knowledge.

Great Intel.
What wind direction was it?
Will the vegetation change and be less secure as season change?
Next trip in there should be a kill attempt.
You don't have to be the best, just do your best.

There was little to no wind at all, hot stifling dead still calm day.

That’s funny you should say that, he obviously wasn’t where I thought he would be, and the older lady next door to this property who I know fairly well, told me there’s a deer with “big horns” she sees every few days across the highway so things are making more sense

Never go back there until you plan to kill him.

If you spook him again or in any way tip him off that you’re hunting him vs just this one random encounter he will be gone no doubt.

I make bone head moves all the time while hunting/scouting but I never think about it as a mistake I just chalk them up as learning experiences and don’t let them happen again. Its fun putting the pieces together even though I am seldom right every once and a while it works out.

I wouldn't worry about it at all. You learned something. I don't think he will go far, he will probably be back there again too.
