Peanut butter

Unread postby SEOHBB » Wed Jul 14, 2021 1:13 am

Heard it twice now, jeff Sturgis has mentioned clients placing a peanut butter jar out for deer. Anyone do this, any feedback, do mature bucks use it? How do you attach it to a tree?

I put peanut butter out where does and bucks travelled - none would eat it. Squirrels and coons would.

Unscrew the lid - drill a hole or two and then screw the lid to the tree. Screw the Pnut butter jar to lid, cut off bottom.

Same here. Mostly raccoons on mine.

The raccoons would sit on the jar and eat it by the fist full.

I tried the peanut butter trick way back in my hunting gimmick days. It’s Wasteful, and peanut butter has gotten expensive and the jars have shrank!

Another gimmick I tried was getting deer accustomed to eating a corn pile I had near my stand. It’s illegal to hunt over bait so I’d stop putting corn down 2-3 weeks out before the opener. Then when season started and I went hunting I’d take yellow beads and string them together with fishing line into like a massive necklace. I’d throw them down in the bare spot where the corn was. Then when the hunt was over I’d just pick the beads up in one strand put em in my bag and leave.

I was desperate.

Peanut butter will attract everything as long as they know what it is. For example I live in the south where peanuts grow. So When I put out peanut butter everything including deer come to it. However when I put out apple’s they rot and nothing comes to them. So I rhink apples dont work but folks from up north were there are apples think they are great. I think it’s all about the deer in the area.

One jar it’s not enough my buddy has 2 55 gallon drums and we use about 5 gallons at a time.

Mobile bait and wait.

I will use peanut butter in the summer to figure out if there are any good bucks in the area. I only use peanut butter on long hikes where packing in a 50lb bag of salt isn’t an option. Peanut butter is high in salt and I mix more in with it. Deer crave salt this time of year in my parts so u can bet u can get pics of every buck on the place.

I put them right on the edge of the nastiest stuff I can find. I put a eyelid middle of the jar and hang it from a overhanging limb like a bird feeder so coons and such cant get it.

A pic of a biggen is all I’m after. From there I use my head. No more bait required.

Scouting last year on public I saw peanut butter lids screwed onto trees. Kinda figured that’s what they were doing!

A little PB on toast with some honey drizzled on top is where it's at!

It is funny to take a look back through the years. I know I’d like to think I was born the baddest deer hunter ever to set foot in the woods but it’s absolutely not true!
