Interesting Wintertime Observation

Unread postby DeadHeadSpread » Tue Feb 09, 2021 12:52 pm

Today on my drive home from work I saw more deer than I ever have in the 3 years I have been doing this commute. I saw probably 50 to 60 deer in broad daylight. There are a lot of steep, high slopes along the interstates I drive. All of the slopes facing northerly still have deep snow and not a deer on them. The steepest southerly slopes were mostly bare and most had deer way up near the top along feeding on the steep snowless hillsides. The shallower southerly slopes didn’t melt off yet and there weren’t any deer on them. So the steepest, treeless, southerly slopes melt off first and expose browse. Our season is over for the year and I already ate the tag soup but it will be good to file this feeding pattern in the memory banks for future late season deep snow situations.
