I will be starting a scouting/hunting log here for my 2021 season. I’ll document my scouting trips and hunts as a place to have all my information for personal reference and for others to follow along.
I hunt in Wisconsin and hunt a variety of terrain types such as swamps, marshes, farmland, Northwoods and a little suburban areas. I hunt strictly Public land.
I have a few posts to add from here documenting some of my scouting so far this year so when I get a chance I’ll add them.

Re: Northwoods_Nomad 2021 scouting/hunting log
First spot I scouted was actually during the 2020 muzzleloader season. It is a large swamp with several islands with some of them being oak.
This day I got as far as the first island which is just under 3/4 of a mile from the lone parking area to this public spot. Access out to the island wasn’t bad on this day as the swamp was frozen over in the morning but my way back to the truck in the afternoon was a different story as the temps got into the low 40’s and I was breaking through the ice on my way back to the truck and when I did break through the ice I was knee to waist high in water and swamp muck.
This island is a larger island and is almost 1000 yards long and about 250 yards wide at the widest point. There are several fingers and points going into the swamp and that is where I found the bedding. Lone trees into the cattails off the fingers and points is where I found the suspected buck bedding.
I did not find as much buck sign on the island as I expected but the beds were in all the suspected spots nonetheless. This will probably be one of my go to spots for the 2021 season.

Re: Northwoods_Nomad 2021 scouting/hunting log
The most recent spot I scouted is a large public tract. The original spots I had picked out to scout from E scouting where not what I thought they would be. So I decided to scout out a cedar swamp that butts up to some private ag fields.
I found lots of buck sign on the transition of the swamp that butts up to the ag fields. My guess would be this is a lot of night time sign as it’s by the fields. Although it may be worth a sit the first week of archery season or so when bucks are still on their summer patterns or during the rut. Anyways this will be a spot I plan on placing several trail cameras as I feel it will be a good spot to see what’s living in the area.
I still feel like I have some work to do in this spot. I believe the bucks are probably bedding in the swamp somewhere and it is a matter of finding where exactly.
This was a scrape that appears heavily used that was not far off the field edge. Looking at the pic I can see at least 7 different branches that have been chewed/broken off. I plan on putting a camera here during this season to inventory the bucks on the area as a nice trail runs right along where the scrape is. If it sees no action I’ll turn it into a mock scrape as I like playing around with mock’s.
