Made one more scouting trip before season opens next Saturday for me. Found my first rubs of the year, several ripe persimmons, falling acorns and big beds. Next 6 days ain't gonna go by quick enough! Still an earn a buck area, and got several doe on cameras in daylight, so hopefully I can get my doe quick.

Found a few good tracks going in for an evening youth hunt with my oldest. Those are my 12 year olds hands but those are still pretty good buck tracks. The one set was only 100 yards or so from the bedding area I killed my bow buck last year.

Spring scouting paired with summer trail cams has produced a potential spot for me. I’m new to all of this so simply finding “good bucks” has been a challenge. I think I need to be patient and wait for the rut because I don’t think they are in this spot at the moment, though clearly do pass through. There are enough does in the area that they must.

I have half the day off today to watch my son, thinking that I'm going to go out and do some in season scouting on a couple properties that I want to learn more about. With not being able to hunt for the next couple weeks and pheasant opener here next weekend, I want to learn where the deer are now for next season. I'll post up my findings, when we get back.

I hit up a public land piece that I scouted this winter, it has a lot of oak trees and sloughs with fields around the edges. My son and I put on 2.57 miles, we never did jump a deer that we could tell anyway, but we did sounds like a herd of elephants going through the woods. I found a nice buck bed with old rubs around it, looking at where it was in not 100% sure when it's being used, for sure not yet this year. It's at the tip of a low brushy draw that comes off a field, the draw is maybe 20' wide.

We circled through the woods where there are lots of oaks and strangely no acorns on the ground, and very few fresh caps either. It's a mix of red oaks and white oaks, not much for deer sign at all.

I did find a trail camera a guy setup over a mock scrape, not legal to leave that out there but whatever, we just walked on by.

I did find a couple very promising spots though, one was a very secluded dry ditch that had 1 spot where there was standing water, it did have a nice 3 finger track by it, I need to do some more work on where they are coming from to see how I could hunt it.

Another spot was off the edge of a grassy slough that had a nice fresh scrape and licking branch, I did prep a tree really quick, did a wind check and figured out what wind would be best for that set. There was really fresh buck poop there as well, I have a fairly good access and may hunt that spot during the rut when the bucks are cruising more.

There were only a few new rubs that I found, but that's not that uncommon for around here.

Did a scout and hunt late this morning, I really wanted to learn more about this piece of public land. It's the same one I scouted last week with my son in tow.

Today was raining and 20-30mph winds, perfect for a scout and hunt. I ended up finding some new bedding areas and a few fresh rubs and scrapes, something that doesn't happen much around me. I stuck to the edges thinking with this wind they would be bedded there instead of the cattails. Most of the tracks I saw and sign was located around the grassy openings in the woods.

I did find a really good spot for a ground sit on a NW wind and a treestand location for a NW also. Walking one of the ditches out I did bump a small buck at 30 yards, he never winded me, he was bedded up in some tall grass along the edge of a little ditch. So I looked around and found a few more beds that would setup nice for a SE wind like we had today.

Put on 2.9 miles and picked out 3 kill trees and 2 ground sits, so a productive morning in the woods.

The rub was waist high as well, but looked a couple weeks old.

Hi. I’ve been learning a lot from this scouting string. I wanted to know do you guys routinely scout in morning looking for hot sign then set up on the hot sign for an afternoon hunt? How do scout in AM and not bump out deer in the area for your afternoon hunt?
Thanks.

[quote="cbay"]Not rewriting the book here evidently. This one quit getting used for the long haul back here I bet.

That is an expensive thing to leave not come back to get. Sometimes I think some young buck finds a cute little woman and forget all about where he left his stand.

Lunger, this is a tactic I know a lot of guys use. I have used it myself in my short bow hunting career and have definitely gotten on deer this way.
Personally, if I can scout between food and suspected bedding, this will often produce a good trail, pinch points, rub line, scrapes, etc. that can help narrow down where exactly the deer will be coming from later that evening. Again, I’m still pretty new to all this so this probably isn’t super advanced. Others can add more. Doing what I described above has led me to LOTS of young bucks though!

I scout a property hard as soon as the season ends, rabbit is usually open still. I check areas where I suspect deer activity from the past season, and check out suspected beds. I log that info. Come next season I give a light scout for sign, and reference my logs. After that every walk to the stand I’m looking for anything of interest.

Took advantage of this spring-like weather to check out a couple new spots this weekend. Found a bedding area that was used at some point this year and past years. Sets up with thermals and watching access, cover would be better early season through start of rut so that's my best guess. Picked out a spot I can observe from a distance.

Second property had some bigger old sign but nothing from this season. Didn't get all the way to the deepest stuff after I walked up on a hunter in a pop up. I felt bad about it, I've been trying to not dive into spots where people are parked but this guy must have jetted around me straight in there and set up while I was on another part of the piece. Seems like the neighbors have been hunting right on the borders as well.
