Late season big woods in the south

Unread postby Matthewkatz » Mon Dec 07, 2020 3:20 pm

Hey guys,
me and a buddy are taking a trip to land between the lakes for some late season hunting. The piece of public is 60,000 acres of mature hardwood ridges. I think we would be lucky to even see a deer. I assume this time of the year, especially in big woods, food is key. What kind of food sources do you southern guys key in on in the late season? If I can find the food I know I can guestimate which points the deer are using based on the wind. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Whatever you think you know about hunting hill country, throw it out the window. There is no rhyme or reason to why the deer do what they do in that place. Acorns should be key if you can find some, don’t overlook natural grass growing in the coves of the lakes if the water is still low. Goodluck.

I wouldnt even be too concerned with food sources. The deer can wait til dark to eat, its not cold enough to force them to feed in the South. Find where theyre bedding and get close, like within 100 yds, probably your only chance at seeing deer

Listen to the latest The Hunting Public's Podcast #137 "Post Rut Strategies for Big Timber Gun Hunting!" They hunted the big woods in Southern Ohio, and while the discussion was focused on pushing deer for gun hunting, they talked quite a bit of habitat types within the woods they were finding deer and food sources. Not sure if you plan to use gun or bow while you're there. Good luck!
On my deathbed, I will receive total consciousness. So I have that going for me, which is nice!
