Tooth aging experts?

Unread postby WV Bowhunter » Mon Nov 30, 2020 3:03 am

So I shot what I figured to be an old buck earlier this week. Took him to the taxidermist I always use and he said in his 40 years of doing it, this is the oldest buck he’s seen. He thought it could be over 10 years old. Thought I’d post a picture of his teeth to see if the folks here agree.

I know I have the jaw bones of most of the big bucks I’ve killed over the years and none of them have wear even close to this one.

I'm no expert by a long shot. I've have seen enough to tell you those are worn down a lot. Those teeth do have a lot of wear. He is a lot older than most you will see.
I'm reason they call it hunting and not shooting.

Those are impressive in a painfull way. Maybe he’s young and liked to eat gravel  10yo wouldn’t surprise me. My 7.5 yo public from a couple years ago weren’t near that bad. I think my buck from this year is 6.5-7.5 and has cracked molars but still not nearly as worn. I just ordered my aging kits last week from Deerage.com=$33 for 90 day service

I worked at deer check stations thru college and can honestly say I've only seen a handful of teeth that worn down. Once a deer gets over 6 or 7 it's nearly impossible to age teeth visually, you have to cross section them and look under a scope. If that guy came across my tailgate working a check station he would fall into the "6+" category. I've only ever shot a couple deer with teeth THAT worn and they were both does and they were grossly flat with the gums.

Cool story there bro.

That being said I know guys that follow/kill a buck for 7-10 years, have all the sheds, pics, etc and they dont show that kind of tooth wear. Sometimes it can come down to the type of soil that particulate deer lives/grazes on. Sandie soil areas the deer all have intense wear on their teeth. Just another tidbit to file away.

I still think you have a mega old buck looking at the tarter build up.

That thing is old! I would love to see a picture of the buck when you shot him, if you're willing to post it!

Not an expert, that deer is really old. You should send in a front tooth, it would be worth it on a deer like that.

[/img] Tooth analysis is certainly more scientific. What can you tell by looking at their feet? These look battle worn but I’ll have to wait for tooth results to have an actual age

That buck could be 10 or more. As muddy said he is past the point of accurately aging by tooth wear definitely 8 or more I would guess. I have seen a couple does worn down that much but never a buck. Cementum annuli would be the only accurate way to age him. Congrats on an old warrior.
Some do. Some don't. I just might...
