Olranks Michigan deer camp adventures

Unread postby oldrank » Sat Nov 14, 2020 4:32 am

Inspired by Mauser.

I will be heading up to the new property today after work. It is our Michigan gun opener Sunday. Other than a couple walk abouts I really haven't had time to put boots on the ground. So, its all gonna be based off of my cyber scouting.

I'm looking at large big woods and tamarack swamps. Should be fun. My property is 25 acres. I have one doe permit. I doubt I will hunt my property. I plan on hunting the public.

6 guys in camp.

Jay - Experienced hunter. Has killed a dozen or so deer. When he hunts he is lethal. Likes working on cars and drinking beer more than hunting. Late 30s

Josh - He is an inactive Beast member. Public land killer. A pile of deer behind him. Late 20s.

Ken. Rookie with one kill years ago. Is active military. Started really getting into hunting a few years ago.. Tries hard but hasn't put everything together yet. Great at pulling out my deer. Mid 30s

Scott- Camp cook. Non hunter. Says he might buy a tag. Mid 30s

Scott B.- Rookie. No kills i know of. Interested in hunting but never had a mentor. Mid 30s

Myself- Beast member. Certified killer. 150 plus kills. 46 years old

Let's see what happens. We are in the antler point restriction zone. I think all total we have 3 doe tags in camp.

I'm pumped.

Glad to be an inspiration! I love hearing about other hunters adventures and how it unfolds and everything. The ups and downs. The how's and why's.

If it wasn't for this site, I'd have never started venturing out of my comfort zone. Let alone out of my state.

Good luck!! I will be reading along as my adventure is coming to an end in about 4 hours.

Cool! Haven’t been to a deer camp in several years, but I have very fond memories of it. I really like the short bio you did of everybody. I’m sure you guys will have a blast. Looking forward to following the action. Good luck!

Ken, Scott B and I all arrived at camp last night. Got an early start this morning. Heading to town for last minute supplies. The others are on there way.

We will be scouting out a few areas. My plan for myself is to get away from the road my property is on. The are a couple dozen cabins on the road and I suspect everyone is going to be hitting the fire trail that comes off our road. Its easy access and where the mind tells you to go first. Ill check it off the list for now. May revisit it in the future as I learn the land but don't want to get any hunts ruined with my limited time.

We will be setting up some pop ups for Scott B. and Jay.

Ken, Josh and I will be mobile treestand hunter.

I'm specifically looking at two things. River bottoms, the Muskegon rivet runs through the area. Also looking at cattail marshes and tamarack swamps. Lots in the area. I want something secure and ignored by others.

Scott B going on an hour wait at Wallyworld to get his tags. Not sure if the system is overloaded or what. Ken has a compulsive shopping issue...the longer we wait the fuller his cart gets.

Awesome thread looking forward to it! Let me know what the pressure is on that Muskegon River area. I have a couple spots in there too in Muskegon County- but stay out of there during gun season.

All set. 43 degrees. Raining. High winds predicted to gust 60 mph. I am over looking a transition between 3 or 4 year old clear cut and an oak ridge.

Ken is on the other side of the trail about 1/2 mile away. He is sitting on a high ridge looking down below. Oaks n clear cuts. Lots of acorns on the ground.

Jay is hunting my 25 acres. Tamarack n cattail transition.

Scott B is hunting my 25 acres up on the high ground opposite end of Jay.

Although all the camps are full and there are guys everywhere the woods is big enough where its alot lighter pressure than back home.

Zeros for everyone today. I put down about 4 miles of scouting. Weather was absolutely miserable.

I have a few new options. The 1/3 elevation line looked good in the hills. Found a couple good spots where historical buck movement is shown in old rub lines.

Also looking at the back side of a couple beaver ponds.
Lots of bedding options. Nothing screamed big bucks here.. sign is few and far between.. Lots of deer trails and thats it. Big woods for sure. Nothing like my home woods. Weather is supposed to break tonight. We will be back at it in the morning.

This would be good fun. No expectations and plenty of food with drinks. I could get down with that.
