Drop tine - pics of exit wound
That’s the exit side. Don’t have a good pic of the entry, but it has to be extremely high. I must have barely cleared the spine.
Since he was quartering, it would also make sense that the arrow barely clipped the top of the off side lung. That would explain the bubbles in the blood. Their ribs actually rise up off their spine, then curl downward.
At that angle I think it’s possible. Thoughts?

Holy mole. I’d have though he’d be a goner.
Must have miraculously found a pocket of nothing? So strange.
He looks not much worse for the wear though

Interesting. Did you shoot him from a tree or on the ground?

Entrance must have been higher and went over the spine, only explanation.

This.
Second pic shows a high dimple of hair a bit further back on the opposite side that might be the entrance. (?)
And it is very possible to clip the top of one lung when shooting through the dorsal spines over the spinal cord, especially at that angle.
He might be breathing hard for a couple days but he will be chasing does again soon.
He looks to be in extremely good condition; I bet he'll be fine.

It depends on the shot angle; if the entrance were at the same height as the exit I'd agree with you (if you're saying that it should have penetrated the ribcage below the spinal cord-some folks erroneosly suggest that there is a "void" below spinal cord and above lungs.)
But I think the OP indicated a downward angled shot which changes the geometry dramatically.
He did indicate bubbles in the blood which indicates at least one nicked lung, but that in itself doesn't impress me much anymore as far as fatality is concerned.
I've come to regard single-lung hits with extreme doubt; I've seen many examples of healthy deer completely recovering from them.
And many lost and never found after travelling great distances on one lung.

Re: Drop tine - pics of exit wound
Here are then entrance and exit holes on that doe I shot this year. I was only about 2" below the spine clipping the top of both lungs. If I had to guess you went through the backstraps area above the spine, but not sure how you made it through the backbone plates up there without seeing bone chips.

Re: Drop tine - pics of exit wound
Yea it is def too high for an exit. I would say if your exit (from tree stand)is mid body or higher the odds are against you. From what I understand the majority of the arteries are lower in the lungs. A one lung, hit high is probably more often than not, non-fatal. Especially on a big bodied buck.
Tough luck man but at least he is healthy.

I agree with the others. Assuming you weren't 30 ft up and 5 yards away (I missed the story of the hunt) that looks like a dead deer based on the exit.

Believe I did the same thing. This would be the exit. Had some bubbles in blood but still alive. Shot him on Oct 3rd and showed back up on cams on the 23rd.

Re: Drop tine - pics of exit wound
My guess is straps and above the spine. Didn't JoeRE post a story about one his brother hit they ended up finding where the arrow deflected and a blade cut lung between ribs without really entering the cavity?
Worst case top of exit side lung got sliced a little, but he looks in good shape, so at least you're still in the game! I guess better outcome than not finding him or ever seeing him again.

Re: Drop tine - pics of exit wound
I somehow overlooked a pic of him showing the entry side. Saw it this morning when I went over pics on the computer rather than phone/card reader.
Will post it on my lunch break
