Mausers Ohio Adventures
Back by popular demand......
Y'all seemed to enjoy my Michigan adventures. Long story short, she left me and I haven't been back.
I tagged my PA buck early. I have another vacation in November.
I'm currently in a hotel in Ohio.
Tomorrow and Sunday morning will be spent mostly trying to find a few likely locations to get on some rutting buck action in November.
I do have my license and bow...I did bring my lone wolf and saddle gear....but unless I stumble into something smoking hot pretty quick, I doubt I use the stands. I will definitely be carrying the bow incase me and an old beast walk into each other up on the ridge.
I've been looking at maps for about ever. I'm overwhelmed and don't know where to start.
Guy at the sporting goods counter said PA was new for the day...sold licenses to MI, MD and SC residents....that made me second guess things. There is a huge amount of public.
I have 1 piece of interest I will start with and take it from there.
The terrain is just mind boggling. Points and saddles and hubs everywhere.
Going to leave around 7am. Figured if anyone is actually hunting, I'd let them do their thing and I will be driving around most the morning and evaluating pressure.
Stay tuned! I will try to update this thread as the weekend goes on. Then revisit it when I come back down.

Re: Mausers Ohio Adventures
Morning of 10/24/20
Got a little bit of a late start.
Drove all the roads and marked access points from 830-1130.
Pressure isnt crazy. Access is limited. Limited roads and limited parking. Some vehicles here n there but for the size of the land, it's not bad at all.
The habitat looks awesome. Gnarly hills and tons of thick nasty tangles.
At one point, I was stopped in the middle of the road looking at the map. I look up and a heavy horned beast was crossing the road within bow range of the truck lol. Heavy thick rack and tall tines. I about died.
Seeing a good bit of rubs right from the truck. Now I'm trying to figure out where to start.
There is actually noone on the north end. I talked to one guy that was leaving. He said the north end usually stays a good bit slower in terms of pressure.
I want to hunt in the worst way. I also wanna maximize my time and learn as much as I can to make the most of the next trip. It'd be real easy to go climb a tree. Tempting. But I feel like my end goal is more important. Get boots on the ground and find atleast a few places I think I can kill bucks.

Re: Mausers Ohio Adventures
Planned about a mile deep hike the check out a couple ridges and saddles.
Soon as I got to the top 1/3rd I couldn't believe my eyes. A bench. And thus far, it traveled along the ridge and is now wrapping right into the first saddle.
Lots of historical sign. Found a couple fresh beds not far from that rub and scrape.
Much thicker than I thought it'd be. But, that's not a bad thing.
Liking what I'm seeing so far!

Re: Mausers Ohio Adventures
Evening of 10/24/20.
I walked a good bit up in that ridge. The bench has sign but nothing crazy. First saddle is light on fresh sign but historic sign is there and the bench dumps right into it. I think it has potential.
Following the elevation and checking points...busted out a heavy footed lone deer. . In that area, there's a bench about halfway down. I think he was bedded on the point just below me watching the bench.
The bench again dumps into a pretty nasty cut in the hill. The top of that cut, again, not mu h smoking fresh...but historic sign and I could see numerous trails dumping to cross the top of the cut. Also another line transition line.
I jumped on an old trail that follows a ridge...it was TORE UP. Scrapes and rubs nearly everywhere for a couple hundred yards down the trail through a great saddle and all over....again, I bumped into a camera.
Kinda bummed. That spot looks fantastic. Thick gnarly stuff, heaviest oaks I've found, a great saddle, transitions etc all come together right up there. That old trail is actually access from the road I learned.....so, if noone is parked there, I guess it's probably still worth a hunt.
I only had a couple hours of light left. I decided to run back down and take a look around where I saw the good heavy horned buck cross the road. Terrain and habitat wise, nothing really jumped out at me. I decided to hike out a ridge where I'd say he probably came off of. I could see oaks up there....flat easy access.
It was raining acorns. Pretty good sign but definitely been hunters back it. A pack of coyotes sounded off on the next ridge 1/4-1/2 mile off. I about jumped outta my skin when one responded within 100-150yds of me. I've never heard one howl so close!
Gave it 15 and figured I'd sneak out while I had daylight. Of course 150yds towards the road I busted 2 deer.
Definitely like what I see. But Im gunna have to stick to what I do best....burn up boot leather and hunt fresh sign. These bucks aren't dumb and I'd imagine pressure will pick up before I get back down here.
Sooooo much great looking stuff. I feel like I can "do better" than just pick a spot and hope for some luck. But at the same time, there's just sooooo much great looking stuff it's hard to narrow down. I think thicker cover and overlooked or otherwise unmolested will be the ticket.
Going to check out a couple more areas tomorrow morning before I make the 4-5hr drive back home.

Re: Mausers Ohio Adventures
Morning of 10/25/20
Really late start. Lol. I think I wake up to the hotel noises...
Rode another public property. Pressure was significantly less. Maybe most guys travel home in Sunday...maybe its not as good...maybe it's a hidden treasure. A lot more open timber than the other piece. But still ample cover. Definitely looks like it'll be worth a look.
Also tried to get into another piece...looks like the only access is off the main highway. Noone was parked there at all yesterday or today....and there's a good chunk of land to get in deep on.
Definitely like what I have seen and found. I think it'll just be a matter of getting on fresh sign where noone else has molested. Overlooked spots...or harder access... whatever it takes.
I'm excited to get back down there. Gunna be a long 10 days of work...going over my gear...going over maps...

Re: Mausers Ohio Adventures
Just an update.
Planning to head down probably Sunday. Possibly tomorrow evening. Planning to be back home next Saturday night.
Been shooting regularly. Been going over gear. I have a plan....but we'll see what pressure looks like.
Not thrilled about the warm temps but looks like mid-week a cold front moves in. Nothing drastic but any little change can help. And, it's November... anything can happen at any second.
I wish I had more boots on the ground knowledge...but that's what this entire season will add upto. I'm hoping I can find a few good spots to keep going back to year after year. Planning to go down during the gun season as well for atleast a few days.
Stay tuned! I'm itching to get back in a tree.

Re: Mausers Ohio Adventures
Hunt #1. Evening of 10/09/20.
Got in later than I wanted last night. Slept till 8am. Left by 9.
Drove to the ridge I scouted that was hot...10 trucks on that road and it's fairly short. 1 in the parking spot to access that area i scouted.
Came to plan B.
Walked...and walked...and walked. 2 hours of walking! Spotty sign but nothing to get me excited. What looked like clear-cut thickets are actually pine stands. Got to the end and kinda scratching my head. Had some pins dropped in areas of interest but expected more sign coming in here. Acorns everywhere.
I spotted an old rub and a trail dropping down into a saddle on a ridge. Walked in and the other side of the saddle is a 5-10yo cut. 2-4" sapling stuff. Old and new rubs around. Nothing crazy but enough to tell me bucks are coming through here.
I'm 2.10mi from the truck.
Super dry. Wind is a little swirly but typically S to N. Anything running the ridge east and west I aughta be able to stick before they get behind me. I kinda expect them to come down the side open spine of the saddle though. Which is good and bad. Not much for cover but good shooting. Lol.
We'll see what happens. It's HOT. Don't know that much will move till the last hour and first couple hours of the day. Debating on leaving the setup and coming back in the morning.

Re: Mausers Ohio Adventures
Last 15mins or so of light I hear a deer trotting....to my right which was completely unexpected. I'm guessing it hit the trail I walked in off and spooked. It didn't know what to do. It circled and got behind me. Blew a couple times and trotted and stopped and walked around trying to figure out what was going on. I never saw a rack but hard to say. Decent sized deer by itself.
Out of nowhere a deer blows on the right side of the clear cut. Then another blew WAY deep on the left of the cut. No idea what they were blowing at. Wasn't me. Wind never went that way at all.
45-50min to get out of there. I hauled everything out. Might go back later in the week but it's a longgggg ways and the lack of sign doesn't have me too excited.
The sign was pretty poor the entire way back there. I know I'm not in Pennsylvania anymore....but, the other ridge I scouted was loaded with sign. Scrapes and rubs all over.
Tomorrow is hotter than today. Going to try to find something that looks better.

Re: Mausers Ohio Adventures
Game planning.
Google Earth came in solid. Been having a heck of a time distinguishing red pines from my phone. I honestly walked in today expecting thickets from clear-cuts.... looking at Google Earth and using the timeline I was able to see the pine stands.
I found a ridge that was clear cut somewhere right around 10 years ago. The good one crossing the road a couple weeks ago was actually heading that direction.
Going to be tomorrow's starting point.

Re: Mausers Ohio Adventures
Slept in.... because I think I had a fever...or something? Sure felt like a fever. Sweating..shivering...once I got up I felt fine. I'm thinking dehydrated from yesterday.
Spent the day scouting. Found promising sign through one area. I did find a ladder stand that is in a pretty good looking spot...it doesn't look like it's been used in a while... another spot where I'd like to hunt, I found a tree someone else climbed recently....found a 3rd spot I'd hunt and there was a camera there. Lol.
Still probably going to hunt that area. I came across several fresh scrapes and rubs.
Went across the road with the stand on my back to hunt the evening.
The sign was borderline unbelievable. It's just torn to shreds. Problem is....it's a 10-12yo cut. There's an old trail down the center. I walked that trail and the sign was everywhere. Up and down the trail and crossing it all over. I just don't know that they will use that trail in the daylight. I wasn't the only hunter to walk it. Actually someone had a cart on it so possibly killed a deer. There's no good transitions that I've found. A lot of the transition is soft and goes into red pine stands that was probably the same age. Going to keep looking at images and see what I can find....might have to ground attack.
Thursday and beyond are looking much better weather wise. I'm probably going to head home Saturday afternoon at the latest.

Re: Mausers Ohio Adventures
11/11/20.
Watched and waited till the rain passed this morning. I've learned there's no sense in getting soaked if you can be there right as it's ending.
Got up on the ridge I scouted yesterday. Plan was to hunt each of the spots I liked as days went on.
Didn't like the first spot. Mainly because to get up there, I have to blow out a thicket where the deer would likely be coming out of.
Kept going. One spot stood out yesterday. Old logging road turns to the right and heads down a point. They cut the point. At that corner is a cluster of oaks. I thought my odds of having does come off the thick point to eat were high.
2 o'clock-ish I catch a deer behind me. Absolutely down wind of me. Wait! It's a buck! "What the....".
He was a young basket rack 8. 14-15" short tines. I thought I should probably pass him. But, I also have never been here and don't exactly know what to expect and I wouldn't pass that buck at home.
I knew he wasn't top pin so I grabbed the range finder. Figured if he's 30 or under, I'd send it.
30yds. "Boy that looks more like 40...I'm only 2 sticks high and it looks further than 30".
30-30-29.8-30-29.9. Ok ok I will shoot for 30..
He steps out. I touch her off and send it. Arrow is flying like a dart. WHACK! leaves explode. Arrow dropped like a lead ballon. He trotted a few steps and stopped. "Well .now it's personal.." grab the range finder.. 46.6. "What the?!?...".
I let him walk off. Went to grab the arrow to ensure it was a clean miss. It was. I kicked a hole in the leaves to range. 38.8.
Kicking myself cause I knew better. But also thinking I might not wanna shoot something of that caliber...
About 430 I hear a deer coming out of the thicket. I look and a doe is eating acorns coming my way. Love me some live bait!
Wait...what's that behind her? Big ole dark....deer! He lifts his head ...oh man! I'm glad I missed that little guy!! 16-18" wide dark high rack. G2s looked 8-10" easy. I honestly quit looking and went into kill mode. Grabbed the bow. Doe is going right...gunna be a tricky but close shot.
He's grunting like a mad man and charging her. She's just trying to eat. Yes! Keep coming that way! 12yds right in front of me! Come on buddy!! A couple more steps!
Big dummy is still grunting and charging her. She's still trying to eat and moving in the best way possible.
He starts trotting towards the open ground. Oh ya!!! He jukes when he passes her and chases her right back into the thicket.
Ugh!!!!! 12yds and I couldn't kill him!!!
Feeling like I just got kicked in the gut. Sitting there thinking about what a crazy evening that was....
Wait...there's a doe coming out of the thicket! More live bait!
She's feeding right to me.
Man....can't believe nothing is following her....
Bruhhht bruht. Wait...what was that? Bruhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhht. Oh there he is!!!
He's shadowing her. But he's gunna come to about 18yds when he hits the open.
Wait! That's a different buck.....eh! Oh well he is just as nice! 16" wide..6" tines. Good mass.
She's feeding and feeding....closer and closer.....
Man...i hope she goes further left so I can draw and shoot this big idiot. All I needed was about 2-3 steps.
Noooooo let's feed directly under the big idiot that's 2 sticks high in a 8" tree....
He's about to hit the opening. Soon as she puts her head down I gotta try to draw before she wigs.
Nope. She locks up. Uht oh.
I'd bet if it was just me and her, she was gunna trot a few steps and stop...but big dummy charges her and she takes off into the thicket.
MAN!!!! I love to have the rut!
Nothing else.....neither buck was crazy big but both are nicer than anything I've killed. I'd say 115"+ easily. I'd been thrilled to kill either one. Guess missing the 80 incher was meant to be. Lol.
So I get down and get back to the truck. Man. That tire looks....not right. Hoping it's just on a rock or stick and looked bubbled ...no. 17 PSI. UGH! Kick a guy while he's down!!!
Filled the tire....I can't find the leak to save my life.
A normal guy would throw the spare on and go hunting in the morning....
But this isn't anything out of the ordinary for me. I am NOT going hunting without a spare. So....I have to miss the morning hunt and get the tire repaired....I know if I don't I will have a 2,000$ tow bill for a flat tire in the middle of nowhere ....not taking that chance.
Definitely hunting tomorrow and Friday. Possibly Saturday morning if I have energy left. I have a 4-5hr ride home and don't really know that I wanna hunt half the day then drive. We'll see.
Stay tuned! Not sure what to do tomorrow....the wind will be blowing right into that thicket. I wouldn't be able to hunt that side of it at all. Not sure what to do yet ....

Re: Mausers Ohio Adventures
The whole tire ordeal turned into a fiasco lol. Finally found a place that can get me in at 10am....so. On the sidelines till this afternoon.
I did find an easier way upto that area which is a huge help. Not sure if I should go back up there or let it cool off till tomorrow....hate to leave deer to go look for deer. I can probably get away with a little different setup and with the different access, I should be able to get in clean.
