Quick question:
It’s hard for me not to lead this question so I’ll ask it rather plainly.
What does an early season rub tell you?

Not much alone.
Just that a buck was there.
I think of sign as a word. It takes multiple words to make a sentence. The other words may be written as land features, prevailing winds, etc. Try and make a paragraph.
Sometimes the story says - "I'm bedding here, hunt nearby to see me in daylight."
Sometimes it says (as in my north forest) "I'm just cruising through at midnight taking the 'acorn trail' and filling my belly - dont hunt me here."
I hope that makes helps...

I'm still learning too - but itchy velvet is my best guess in the earliest of the fall, if that is what you are asking.

Are you seeing early season rubs ? If so, where are you located?

I’m in southern Wisconsin.
I am seeing a few rubs. This is my second year in archery and my second year beast hunting.
I suppose what I THINK I’m asking is, if I find a high rub this time of year, say near beans or acorns, is this a sign that a mature buck may be patternable and in this area?
I hunt, I fish and I sing guitar solos in songs.

Re: Early Season Rubs
Worth a look.
I would think that it qould be hard for a small deer to make a high rub...
Find some other pieces of the puzzle. Tracks, trails, transitions... what time do you think it is coming through? Not when you want it to come through, but when it is likely to be coming through.
Maybe it is a good spot, maybe it isn't- but may point you in the right direction to where you should be looking.

Right on, welcome to the beast!
There are some sections on "rubs" in the best tactics section pinned
but i'd say there is a lot of missing information as others suggested. I think the early season rub will just tell you that there was a buck there at some time. Depends on if that rub is in a bed, transition, open woods, field edge, etc....
If it is a rub in the open woods or without a lot of cover, and early season It would let me know there was a buck around that's getting fired up. Rub height matters and you can try to follow tracks, or look for close by bedding to try and put some more pieces together.

Very early rubs are usually made by mature bucks.
