I was walking past some cattails along a busy road and the cattails is maybe a half acre patch or so and said screw it and just ran through them alittle from tree to tree and found this along with a few other beds but looking at the map I see trails leading alittle further back to a few bushes which I didn't check.
Honestly would've just walked right on by but something in me told me to run through the cattails but regardless this bed is far enough in to where I dont think he can see anything walking by just hear or smell and like I said there's a really busy road maybe 70 yards behind these beds so I dont know when he would be bedding here. Also in front is a clearing but then surrounded by dog wood and nasty stuff and its a small area that ive never seen anyone go into. Maybe when the wind blows towards him from where I was walking so he can smell me as I walk by ? Also I just wanna make sure this is more than likely a buck bed because this just came to my head even though I scouted it in the spring/winter and I have seen a large buck in the area along with smaller ones maybe a half mile away but headed from this direction a month ago so I'm taking a wild guess and gonna say he got up from here but earlier in the day because it was mid summer and headed towards food. Will bucks bed in something they can't see out of even though its overlooked? And from what I remember there wasn't much water just maybe alittle wet in the cattails.
Is this a buck bed for 2 wind directions?

Here is one of the main beds I found tucked in maybe 15 yards into the cattails

Im having a hard time scaling the picture and how large everything is. Looks like a great spot tho.
Yes, they can bed w/o being able to see well laying down but only bc they are very secure. Yes, flat ground and some hill country beds could be for multiple winds. I like to see a large flat spot though, showing they have been turning their bodies. Id could also be terrain or spot specific but in general I see multiple beds in a small area for multiple winds.
If youre looking for a large buck then the length and size of the bed is one way to guess. Locating tracks is another good way.

I'd say the bed is like 6 feet long or so also yeah i just want sure if they would bed like that if they can't see much , i know I swamps they will but there isn't much water there and there's an opening so close by so It just didn't seem like a good bed but its forsure overlooked

Re: Is this a buck bed for 2 wind directions?
Deer in general and big bucks in particular have no qualms with bedding in cattails where they can't see far. It is almost impossible for a predator to approach and not be detected...sloshing water, sound of cattails, scent and even sight. The wind tends to swirl in these 'bowls' in the cattails. The challenge in these spots is finding a good setup tree or ground location. I know of hundreds of spots like this and some 2-3 acre spots have dozens of beds like this but you can only shoot a few yards near bedding because if the vegetation. Study how a buck would most likely exit his bed based on trails, likely food source based on that year (ag fields change year to year and mast crops are variable). Find the closest set up you can get into without spooking the buck based on his likely travel.
A more patient (better) approach would be to choose an observation tree maybe 200 yards away, get high in a tree and watch and learn. You may or may not be able to see his bed but what you really want to learn is what he does in daylight once he gets up. Then move in for the kill on the right wind based on observation and hunting knowledge.
Wishing you well.

One more thing...after zooming in on the picture it almost looks like the deer would be facing towards the trees. Would that make sense for your typical winds?

Whats weird is the typical wind would be blowing in his face with the road to his back im guessing he would be trying to see what he can into the clearing and then smell the small section of cattails behind him but this spot just doesn't make much sense to me thats why I'm so confused but I know there's some nice bucks and they bed somewhere in that area

Here's one of the rubs from a rubline about 200 yards away from this bed

It is rare but there are a few examples I have observed where bucks don't bed with their back to the wind. It could be swirling winds or that he's learned that the road actually provides safety. Is there a drop-off from the road down to his bed?

Yeah there is a 10 foot or more drop off with a pretty big fence. Its a very busy road, i can't imagine he could cross it without getting hit at anytime of day or night, there for noones ever came from the back side
