Re: Live from the field 2020
Hit up a thick swamp area with the high wind
Got back to the bedding area and it was void of sign. Relocated on a transition of high ground to the swamp where there were fresh tracks and some old rubs and scrapes but nothing showed.
Going to get out again tomorrow.

Re: Live from the field 2020
Had a great hunt with my daughter. No bucks seen but did see 4 doe. I asked if she wanted me to shoot one or hold off for big daddy. She said wait on big daddy. Although he didn’t show that just means we get to try again next weekend.

I hope that means people scored.
I needed a day off to rethink everything I’m doing, (or not doing)
I stayed home too. I been putting alot of time in the woods this season and needed to catch up on bills That are overdue and other things. Its been rainy and 30 mph winds today. I live close to a public rifle range and been hearing shots. Assuming its people sighting in their guns before next weekend’s gun opener. I bet they’re having fun out in this weather today
I drove through a lot of public on my way home today. Probably 30 miles worth. 5 trucks is all I saw, and 2 were my uncles.
Also saw one deer in 4+ hours of driving.

Had a very slow morning. Only saw one small 8 early on. This evening I saw 4 bucks (all 2.5 or younger), and 15-16 does and fawns. My wife had a shooter come by her, but the sun was right in her eyes and he was gone before she could get a shot. We will be after them again in the morning.

First two really remote spots I went to already were occupied, so I went back across the creek and contemplated going home but instead I set up in a tree 20 yards from the bank where I'd seen some small rubs and scrapes on the way in. I gave myself until 5:22 and then I was gonna start packing it in, but heard sticks snapping behind me. I looked back and saw a doe about 40 yards out heading straight for me. Then the grunting started and I thought maybe what I thought was a doe was a small buck. It was pretty dark by now. The next thing I know the doe takes off and I hear more grunting. That's when this giant comes into view. He was a tank, I'm guessing at least 4.5 to 5.5 years old. At this point they would've been about 30 yards behind me. He snort wheezed as the doe took off and started grunting again and making a rub. I began grunting back at him and snort wheezed, but he continued rubbing. Then instead of coming straight at me he kinda circled around to the right and was sniffing the air and licking his nose. I could barely see at this point and heard him move off. I was shaking so bad it took me a few minutes to be able to stand up and climb down. I've never had such an intense encounter!
Sounds like a great hunt!
Going to try him again?
Me and a buddy went back in and did several sits in that area, but never saw him again. Looks like he ghosted!

Re: Live from the field 2020
Today was an epic day. Griff’s dad shot a two year old buck with a broken antler, and Griff got the big one they were after yesterday! I haven’t seen it in person but it looks like a mature buck. Wide and heavy. Short tines with a twisting drop tine!! After all the years we’ve hunted S.D. this is the first wall hanger. We’ve shot several stud 3 yr olds that some people would mount, and I have a big 5x5 mulie that I went back and forth on. But this one is worthy. Tine length hurts his score (who cares) but I’m thinking mid to upper 140’s??
I was unaware of all the killing because I was scary remote. No reception. I told myself I was shooting a mounter or nothing, and wound up shooting one that I don’t know what to do with. I think he’s a slob 3 year old with long 4’s. Don’t have enough reception for a pic.
I shot him at 8:45 this morning. I was 3.1 miles from the car as the crow flies. Took my time with pics and quartering. At 12:10 I was loaded up! I decided to man up and take the whole deer at once. I couldn’t get the pack on unless I was sitting down. Had to rollover and stand up. I had food and water for the whole day, spotting scope, and more.
I had to navigate the nastiest terrain I know of and climb roughly 300’ of elevation. Probably more like 400-450 with all the up and down. Took me 6 hours but I made it. A mile and a half was pretty flat and open, but I logged 10 miles for the day. I’m BEAT. I’m not exactly a big guy and I’m guessing my pack was around 100 lbs.
I feel super accomplished but man alive do I hurt!!
Told the boys I’m sleeping in.
Oh and Boogie... I took a pic especially for you. The lucky hat strikes again. 1st time I put it on all year. That’s all it takes I’m 4 for 4 with it since I dug it out of that tote in 2016.
