Milkweed question

Unread postby Moose » Sat Aug 08, 2020 1:05 am

Can you pick milkweed to soon if theres pods? Im scouting a place that looks like decent pods on them already. Not sure if they need to develop more or not. They look smaller then the picture shows.

I would wait until they start to dry out a little bit. You can pick them early as long as the silk on the inside is formed.

Yes, if you pick them too green the silk is wet and packed and won’t fluff right. The pods don’t have to be totally dry and brown and cracked open, but they do need to be headed that direction. Usually September is the time to pick them.

You can pick those pods in the picture if you want. Slit them down one side and put them in a paper bag or something breathable. Check them in a week or two. They will dry out and you can pull the fluff out and put into a container.

I picked some cat tails that were shedding today. Seemed to work alright. Not sure how it's going to last.
