Re: How do you feel about naming deer?
Im yet to name a deer. I dont see anything wrong it, i hunt for meat so ive never had a reason to name any either. This will be my first year of hunting the beast method so maybe i will have all kinds of names by the end of the season. I will probably name them a curse word lol!

Re: How do you feel about naming deer?
I find it extremely annoying.
I guess if you want to do it among family or friends then knock yourself out.
As far as on any Utube or hunting show I watch that's naming deer...
I get the "oh one of these guys" perception right away, and it's turned off immediately.

No, mostly because I'm no good at coming up with cool names for big bucks and also because if I go and name one now I need to start naming them all.

I shot a buck once. And his name was...
I didn't know what his name was, so I just called him Fred.

Bummer of a birthmark, Hal.

Re: How do you feel about naming deer?
I just use this
Target 1,2,3 ect.
I don't give deer a name, but the above way let's me keep track of bucks I'm interested in chasing.
If someone wants to name a buck go for it, not my thing and I won't tell anyone what they can are can't do. Average every day guys like members of this fourm.
Now hunting shows and most youtube guys when they do it I just want to vomit and soil my boxer brief's.

Re: How do you feel about naming deer?
I name them out of respect so that when I kill them I can personally thank them.
It’s not as meaningful to thank deer 1 for giving up its life.

Re: How do you feel about naming deer?
I didn’t read all the comments. I think some names are super cheesy. Like named after pro athletes and such. But I do like names if it is given because of a characteristic.
For example, at one of my spots there was a couple big ten pointers. I named one “Wilson” because I knew for a fact he lived on the neighbors (home improvement reference ) the other I called the split brow ten.
For years I chased the Big 8... he was the only big 8 I knew of at the time. Buck I killed in 2016 was named The Hulk because “what a BEAST” was the first thing that popped into my head when I saw him.
I just want to be able to reference deer quickly. For example:
“You mean the shorter tined wide ten?”
“No not him, the ten that has a little inward curl to his main beams.”
Or
“No not him. Curly.”
If you’re a close friend of mine you know which buck I’m talking about and at which property. It’s sooo much easier.

I dig it and am personally cool with your answer. Think as hunters we all have stuff that just annoys us. I get annoyed by what some consider archery equipment. Or guys who call themselves a bow hunter but grab the rifle the first chance they get. I get annoyed by laws and regulations. I get annoyed when a guy who hunts real world private gets thrown in the same category as Hollywood hunting. I get annoyed by those who blame others for their personal failure.
End of the day I am only good enough to take under 20 yard shots. So I better have dang sure some habits that get a buck close. I don’t enjoy watching bucks 50 yards away saying ...Hey I laid eyes on a Good’en. If naming em gets me inside the Red Zone I make no apologies. And your answer was well written and did not offend me just giving ya the other side of the coin. Any hunter/huntress out there for the simple reason they love it is a friend of mine regardless of minor difference.
Life is hard; It’s even harder if you are stupid.

Re: How do you feel about naming deer?
It's not a necessity for me. And the one I did name. I 1st saw on July 4th. So when talking about him. It was easier to say,"the July 4th buck". Then "that big half nontypical. The one I photo'ed on property X. You know the one with a perfect 5 point left side and the 7 point nontypical right side."
I do agree some hunters take it too far. But if you have lots of good bucks to keep track of. With similar genetic traits. It's less confusing to name them, to keep track of which one is which.
I did like the name Lee Lakosky gave that gnarly old buck he killed a few years back. When I still watched TV hunting shows. Gnarls Barkley. It fit that buck well!

Re: How do you feel about naming deer?
I name ones that I wish to put a tag on at some point. Or just anything that makes it and interesting encounter. So I might name two a year. This one I named Hoover, because he was like a vacuum cleaner picking up acorns. He would not stop and eat. He just walk and eat with head to ground. Just moving right along. I got camera out to see if he made 2020.

I'm reason they call it hunting and not shooting.

Re: How do you feel about naming deer?
If I hunted solo I doubt I would do it. But the properties I’m on are shared so it makes it easier for everyone to associate with what deer we are talking about. Most the time it’s antler characteristics or something funny.

Re: How do you feel about naming deer?
I've intentionally avoided it for so long. But, as a point of reference when there are a lot of bucks around, i see how it can be helpful. Bucks only get names from me when they are referenced for so long and it is unintentional. I see its practicality, but i still avoid it. "Kicker" is a lot easier than "The buck with the 9 point frame, short brows, g4 on the left and a kicker off his right g2"?

Re: How do you feel about naming deer?
I can see where you guys with a lot of bucks to keep track of would Start to do that. That’s a good problem to have!
I was mostly anti trail cam till last season so Ive never had a ton of inventory in the past. Just what I saw in the woods or sign I saw in woods I assumed to be a “shooter” I don’t think I’ve ever had more than 4 targets in a season and honestly it’s usually 1 or 2. Can’t think of a 3 yr old deer I ever found that made I through the season to really have history with any one animal either. This past season I know 2 that age or better made it ( I was actually running a fair amount of cams) but I don’t know how they faired the winter. Heavy snow had the herd walled in a fairly small area they were drawn to by guys feeding hay bales. Hopefully those boys put down a lotta hay cus the browse line in the acreage surrounding that area is about 6 ft up on anything a deer would eat, even balsam and such. I’m guessing she was dire straights around there come late March. Never say never they say.. who knows maybe with all these cams I have out I’ll have trouble keeping track of all the monsters this seasOn
