How do you feel about naming deer?
I’ve got no problem with people naming deer but for me personally it just doesn’t feel right. I can’t do it. It’s a wild animal, a deer, they aren’t ours to name. A big 8 , a wide nine, ok but not Taz, or joe bob, eye lean. I’m just curious how other hunters feel about it. Perhaps IVe never had enough big bucks on my radar to feel the need to start naming them.
It seems like the “hip” thing to do. Watch The saga of the Frankenstein buck on YouTube. Nope you just lost me. Or how about Someone showing trail cam photos of joe, Frankenstein, tank and burrito. Then they tell you about each one. It’s like Are you more excited about the deer or the name you gave it? I just can’t get into it but I can’t really put my finger on why.
Again just how I feel about it. Not saying you’re wrong for being into that type of thing. If you are into it maybe you just got so many bigs running around you can’t keep track. That’s a good thing.

Re: How do you feel about naming deer?
I think it was a fad, and yes, I was guilty of it years ago when all the “pros” were doing it on their videos.
For me anyway, it has turned into, The Split Brow, The Wide 9.... The 2.5 Ten and so on. The fad is definitely over for me, but I do name them based on their characteristics and to identify in my camera logs or in discussion with my neighbor, As we share a lot of the same bucks.

My good buddy has had a turtle named "Dinner" for about 15 years.
I agree with you--the deer I hunt are not pets. But I would not other people's habits bother me either.

I’m with you. I find it weird naming something you’re trying to hunt, kill, and eat.

Re: How do you feel about naming deer?
I dont name my deer, seems a little silly other than, tall 8, wide 9 something like that. I did have a buck named the G2 buck a few years back, because he had long G2's..... I ended up shooting him so maybe I should name more.

Re: How do you feel about naming deer?
My hunting partners and I usually have a few named each year. I've never felt it weird to name a deer. Sure makes it easier to talk about which ones we've seen. There names usually have something to do with where they live or their characteristics.
It only takes 15 seconds for the hunt of a lifetime.

I name deer, it’s the only way I can keep up with them in a log format. I don’t name every buck I cross paths with. Usually I discover quite a few new 2.5s each year and if I happen to discover something about the buck that can later help me kill him then I name him. If I just keep writing habits about the nice 8 it confuses me and I don’t remember what deer I’m talking about while looking back through notes a year or two later.
I also name old bucks that have a way of beating me like a drum every season. In my head they have earned it. Had one I called Swoops who I chased for years and never even saw him while hunting.
For me to hunt a spot I have to know there are bucks there that I care to shoot. So generally I have pics of the same deer year after year. They all have the own particular timing so it’s just easier for me by referring to them by name. Plus it’s exciting when I lay eyes on one I named 3 years b4. But to each there own we all find our own fun in the deer woods.

I don't think about it. I named one buck in my life and his name was Oldrank. The original.

Re: How do you feel about naming deer?
I do - it’s literally just about keeping track of them for me. I’m a biologist and work on some big properties. There is zero way I can keep track of these bucks in logs without having some type of name for them (one large property has dozens of big deer). Plus it’s easy for the landowners and I to talk about the bucks When they know what deer I’m talking about.
For my own hunting it has to be a big deer I have history with. Muy Grande, Boone, Forks, etc. Again for tracking my intel for that particular animal. The Big 8 just doesn’t work when you know where a pile of big 8’s are!

Re: How do you feel about naming deer?
LONG before the TV shows even existed, we gave deer names, but it was not deliberate NOR did every deer get one. I think it is all part of the fun of hunting. I personally give names to deer while trying to describe them to friends and family during one of my hunting stories, and then those descriptions tend to stick once I see the deer again on the hoof, kill him, OR on a camera.
"Hunt and let Hunt" my new saying...

Re: How do you feel about naming deer?
Not my deal, would never do it myself, but i don't really run cams or chase individual bucks all that often. I can see the utility of keeping track of bucks, that makes sense. When it turns into the big story and the name being floated over and over again like a lot of the more commercial hunting shows, that's when it veers into off-putting for me. If you're just doing it for you and you close hunting group, have at it.

Re: How do you feel about naming deer?
I do think it is a little silly, but I do it now and then but strictly for the purpose of describing the set up of a certain buck when I’m telling someone else so they can keep the bucks I’m after separate and know which one I’m talking about

I have to agree with this. If I just referred to them as the tall 8 or wide 10 then over the years there’s so many with similar characteristics I’d never be able to keep up.

Re: How do you feel about naming deer?
I have no problem with it and do it on occasion, usually a deer I have a lot of history with. Usually has something to do with their characteristics, like ome deer I've had on camera is a real tall 7 point, horns go kind of straight up, so he got named 7up. Had one few years ago I hunted for 4 years, always had long g3s, so he was named g3. Just makes it easier to keep up with.
