How do you tell if a buck won't grow much more in velvet?

Unread postby Denisboyko22 » Mon Jul 20, 2020 4:42 pm

Today I walked past a overlooked spot 2 hours before dark and I heard crashing in some water so I stopped and right at this moment the buck that walked out was wide and probably 120 inches maybe an 8 or 10 pointer, didn't get a clear view but he caught my wind and ran back to where he came from. My question is could I expect this buck to be a pope and young by the begging of the season? This is central wisconsin if that will help. Seemed like he had a big body already too. This is my first year summer scouting so I'm not too sure how velvet works I just know they loose it typically end of August and they can grow up to an inch a day

They are pretty much done growing by the first week of August. He might put on a few more inches but they are probably 85-90% done by now.

I agree with Jeremy.

Depends on area/region, but I would say they are mostly at 85-90% right now. With that said, I’ve watched some bucks blow up over the course of the next 2 weeks in the past. If the ends of the points are very round yet, there’s some growth left.
How bad do you want it?

This is the first year Ive really paid attention to velvet bucks via camera. Ive been trying to compare to past bucks and doing some reading on it. If I post a trail cam pic, would you guys be able to tell how big he is probably going to be?

Usually when the tips of tines and beams are darker in color they are still growing.

They're about 90% done now I'd say as well. If i remember when I get home I'll post some pics from previous years and show some examples.

This is good to know! I figured they had more to grow. Thanks for the tip!

Thanks for the information. I’ve had the very same questions as far as growth and timing.

if the tine is bulbous and rounded off it is still growing.. but really you just have to be patient and wait to see what happens. I’ve had some disappoint and some surprise me.

It’ll drive you crazy wondering what they’re going to do
