Hello fellow beasts. Im new here and I hunt tennessee, In this particular piece of public is big woods hill country, Ive found the most beds, and even beds worn down to the dirt in pockets that were'nt cut in a clear cut. These clear cuts are overgrown with a mixture of greenbriar, blackberry bushes, and rosetype bushes that are head high and too thick to walk through unless you crawl through the tunnels the deer made to get to these islands. What kind of wind would a buck use with these beds. Im thinking he would want the wind/thermals to pull through the thicket and watch the open islands. It makes sense deer would use these very dense areas considering we have a 6 week rifle season. do you guys have any experience in bedding areas on islands in thicketts?
Thanks,
Matthew

Re: Clearcut Island Beds
Following this, I just got permission to hunt a timber block with a large clearcut and will probably be guessing bedding this fall.
Look sharp, act sharp, and be sharp, but don't be an idiot and cut yourself.

Re: Clearcut Island Beds
If its thick all the way around the islands he is likely using it on any wind. If you actually look at the beds you can tell id a bed is wind specific cause the have an obstacle to the back looking down wind towards open... Non wind specific beds are generally surrounded by thick cover. Sometimes the bed your looking at might be wind specific but there are other beds close by for other winds.

Re: Clearcut Island Beds
I like hunting old clear cuts because there are very few trees to hang a stand on and the deer know it. The does will bed all in the tall grass anywhere there is a large bush/thicket or on the edge of the hardwood "point/island". In my area I hunt that is very similar to your second photo the spot seems to be almost exclusively doe bedding but the bucks know it and patrol it looking for hot does.

Re: Clearcut Island Beds
all around the thickett gets hunted hard but no one dares enter it because its nothing but briars. Everyone hunts the edges but ive seen the best sign in the center where no one goes. I got a pic of what one of the trails looks like in these places.
