Developed fungal infection ....

Unread postby TheMait » Wed Apr 01, 2020 2:30 am

HI-
Weird question... This past fall I started off the first entire week of the season trudging through some pretty nasty swamps in Michigan. There were a couple of times I was in muck mid chest deep. Toward the end of October, I developed a sharp pain in my heart area...and ended up in the ER. I was diagnosed with an unknown fungal infection in my lung. Doctors still don't know exactly what type it was or where it would have come from. Guesses are from either the swamp or cleaning out a garden in the fall which had decomposing plant matter in it. The reason my body wasn't able to fight off the spore which entered me lung was that I ran back to back marathons, a week apart, in mid October-according to the doc.

My question is...have any of you guys who spend much time back in swamps ever picked up or heard of someone developing a lung fungal infection like this? I'm hesitant to head back again this year...but have no idea if this is definitely the source...or if it was just a coincidence. Thanks!

Wow that some like some nasty stuff whatever you got into :o I’ve never heard of someone experiencing that from hunting in swamps/marshes. Hopefully that’s not the case so you can get back in there! Have you made a full recovery from it now?
How bad do you want it?

Anything is possible. Nasty stagnant water in those marshes and swamps that could contain who knows what. I have hunted them my entire life and other than a nasty stomach virus from swallowing the water I haven’t had any other issues but wouldn’t rule anything out.

I've heard of Blastomycosis in hunting dogs, and people can get it too.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blastomycosis

It doesn't keep me out of the swamp, but if I was feeling poorly I would certainly get it checked out.

Eesh, that’s ugly.

So far so good on not getting swamp funk. Hopefully it stays that way for everyone.

I go in the marsh... And the marsh comes out with a nasty virus. LOL... Seriously though, I spend a great deal of time up to the boys and beyond in marshes, swamps, rivers, creeks, and ditches... It aint hurt me none.

I have heard of guys with open wounds dyeing from infections they pick up in stagnant water... So, its possible... But your far more likely to die driving to the marsh than from a bug you pick up in it... Living in fear, is no way to live... You only get so much time on this planet, Jump in and let whats meant to be, be...

Funny it’s not in Dodge, with the Horicon marsh and all. A lot of those coincide with areas that have a lot of wetlands.

I read a magazine article about a guy who died from a lung infection. Long story shirt, he accidentally inhaled a tiny piece of monofilament biting the tag end off of a fishing knot while steelheading. That mono had bacteria commonly found in beaver colonies- wasnt giardia, something else- and caused the lung infection that killed him.
