If only I had the nose of a beagle

Unread postby Stingray713 » Fri Jan 03, 2020 7:44 am

Been hunting this guy for the past few years. A couple weeks ago a club that hunts with dogs in the same area went in after him. In the past the dogs would get on does or smaller bucks while the mature buck sat tight, but these guys kept going in after him.

They ended up sending three packs of dogs in and ran out all of his lady friends then he ended up getting jumped.

I was sitting a couple hundred yards away, and heard the entire sequence go down. Nothing to do now but go find another one to hunt. If only I had the nose of a beagle.

I get that's how it's done and is legal and isn't fundamentally different than running bears with dogs, but not my cup of tea.

I hope you get a crack at another one.

PS - My sight hound (greyhound) picks up fresh deer tracks all the time. Got on some so fresh this morning that he had to take a dump on them.

Going on the assumption that they followed all applicable laws I'm happy for them.

I would've been substantially happier if you got him instead though.

Good news... Just as there are plenty of fish in the sea there are plenty of pigs in the timber. I'm confident you'll get on another monster soon.

Take my words of wisdom very seriously. Just as Dan is known as, "The Big Buck Serial Killer" I'm known as, "The yearling doe occasional killer."

Nice buck.

That's what happens when they can't get them any other way.

I don't mind the dog hunters when they abide by the locals laws and respect property lines.

Imagine what his smile would be like if he actually outsmarted it and got it 1 on 1. ;)

Should have been more aggressive earlier in the fall, but I really thought he was in a good spot to make it through the season.

But yeah, good for them. Is it September yet?

That is a dandy buck, congrats to the hunter. Bummer you didn't get a crack at him, but that's how it usually works out for me

I'm surprised he got to that age around here. We hunt in Eastern VA and I can count on 1 hand bucks that were 3.5 or older when killed. I enjoy a good dog chase as much as anyone else but it really destroys the age class and pressures the deer to lay tight until dark most of the year. Not to mention total disregard for other peoples property, they just play dumb and say "the dogs dont know where the property lines are".

Guess it's just a regional thing... Around here dogs get shot that chase deer. Dosent matter if it's a beagle or a chihuahua its just not accepted.

I'd bet money the same guys who stack up 11 deer in a day running dogs complain about coyotes killing all the deer.

Great buck

It’s just a way of life down here, y’all do deer drives up North.. We run dogs down South. Think it’s cheating? C’mon with it ;)

I met a lotta folks that drive far and wide to Wisconsin, Kansas, Indiana... to deer hunt. Never met one who drove down to Florida, GA etc..

Yup dog running bear hunters in Michigan stired up a huge mess some years back.
People are just tired of those dogs not knowing property lines.

Also the hunters them selves knowing the property is posted will set the pack on a bear track seen on the edge of a road surrounded by posted property, hopeing they will run the bear to public land.

They can still run bears with dogs but the rules are a lot stricter now and they are really lucky to still be able to do it.

Those types of Issues will many times end up as some type of ballot proposals and the general non hunting public get to vote on it and they you know vote anti hunting peroid.
