New farm
I have permission to hunt a 240acre farm with about 30% pasture 40% cut bean fields and 30% draws and creek bottom. I would call it semi hilly for se iowa. I have never scouted this place yet but have been told theres alot of deer. The problem i see is i have to walk through a big pasture to get to the field and timber. My question is, should i walk the edges of where the field meets the timber and just sit when i find sign or should i walk through the draws and creek bottom until i find good sign? My season ends Jan 10th. I am using a muzzleloader and hunting from the ground aswell. Thanks!

Re: New farm
Also a ground hunter - I’ve had more deer and been in the action more this year than ever and I’m hunting public I never got to scout in off season so kinda your situation.
I’m finding the nastiest stuff I can and SLOWLY creeping in and. Sitting down when I see hot sign or keep moving . I’m also burning these spots out so that will happen but I’m also learning them for next year.
I own 200 acres but get bored always hunting same places and have come to love this chasing bedding hunting- I’m down south so it’s not the exact same but bedding is still key. I still don’t know what I’m doing but I’ve been in the deer on public this year - and good deer- more than ever - and keeping pressure on my farm down-and having FUN!
So you’ll probably burn it out this way but I Sain ends in a few weeks who cares- not sure how much pressure your deer get but I’d avoid the field edges and head to thickest stuff I could find first.
Hope that helps! GOOD LUCK!

Re: New farm
I would observe the bean fields for an evening or two and based on what is coming out before dark would tell me if I get aggressive or set up on a field edge.

Ive been hunting a small 30 acre farm this season and have killed 3 bucks with a bow on it. A couple things I've learned might help you.
Consider glassing the field from afar before going in, if you want to evening hunt glass evening time and vis versa.
I glassed the farm I'm hunting and a huge 10 point was right behind the farmers house, I seen where he beds and all. This will tell you timing and location to push in and hunt fresh sign.
The two small acreages with overgrowth I hunt they are always bedded on or within 50yards of the transition between habitats in the thickest cover. Thicket/field and thicket/timber
I ask the neighbors if I can cross through their property (when asking I wear work clothes NOT camo) a-lot of times they let me park on their property and tell me where they see deer frequently. Ive had em tell me exactly where their bedded. Neighbors can be your best resource or your worst enemy if their poaching, ive ran into this as well. Either way a great idea to let them know you’ll be around and see if you can walk through. If their sketch tell em your deploying and chaining cell cams all around the property.
Cell cams help alot if your not using them.
I’ve been hunting fresh sign this year over anything else and its by far changed my perspective on how to hunt. Alot of time cause im pretty new to hunting ill push till I find really fresh scat/tracts or bump something. Im usually down wind when I bump it, I hunt right there or come back another day and catch em coming back to bed.

Re: New farm
I cant really see the fields from the road to glass them. The pasture is up against the road. This farm is land locked, only one way to access it.
