A story
Tonight I set out to process my buck from Thanksgiving. I've only been processing my own deer for 5 or 6 years now. But I've seen a few with minor injuries here and there. But I'm no expert.
This buck had a lump on the inside of its back leg. I spotted it when I gutted him, but I was in a hurry to get to the inlaws. Fast forward to tonight. I decided I would skin around it and quickly chunk it down then figure out what the lump was. Things didn't seem right right after I started so I did a quick job to just get the meat off.
So I started skinning the rear leg. Being that the deer was kept around 30 degrees the skin came off hard. Being as careful as I could I started to get it coming off when suddenly it popped like a pimple on my face and down my sweatshirt. Spewing all over the floor like it threw up. Now I can handle cutting a finger off or breaking a leg. But when it comes to smells I'm not the guy.
Engage the dry heaving into puking. I literally burned my clothes in the wood furnace and walked back to the house. Showered and went back to clean the shop. It took me 2 hours of dry heaving to squeegee the floor. It still smells. I think I left my man card out there.
At first I debated calling it in to get a new tag, but that would mean giving up the rack. Somewhere since then I just don't care. I hope they'll take it and I hope it's frozen by morning. I'm still not well.

Re: A story
It looks like an old injury.
I have seen smaller pockets like that but they were clear fluid and not much odor.
I have seen open infection where it smelled bad and the hunter didn’t keep the meat. That looks like quite the surprise

Re: A story
I'm going to see if I can turn the whole thing in for another buck tag. I still have doe tags incase.
No I am not eating anything off that deer.

Re: A story
I've seen smaller areas like that from tine wounds in both deer and elk. Think I saw a video with one in a moose, where the tine was still in the puncture. IMHO that's from something more than a tine. Broadhead/arrow that wallered around for awhile?????
Hit by a car?????? The small ones didn't smell pleasant! That had to be very intense. Don't blame you for losing your cookies!!!!!!

Re: A story
I can't handle smells as it is. This was amongst the worst I've smelled. I probably could've handled it if it didn't puke all over me. It's a gift that keeps on giving. I hate losing the meat, I also hate losing the antlers. But if I can get a call back and get another tag by turning it in I'm going to do it.

That's horrible! I showed my wife, she was about to eat hummus... now she's not.

Re: A story
My gut hasn't been right all day. I've washed and scrubbed the floor five times, it still smells.
Unfortunately I had to surrender the head to get a new tag. That wasn't an easy choice, but I decided I would rather fill my freezer. I guess I did the right thing putting the buck down either way. There was 0 fat on him. I've seen bucks leaned out after the rut but never like this.

Offer her some vanilla yogurt to settle her stomach; she'll be fine...
